fruiting pf cakes
    #19407724 - 01/12/14 10:29 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

So I've got some questions regarding fruiting of pf cakes.  I have a dozen of them going and they are just starting to show signs of mycelial growth but I want to have everything figured out before they are ready to fruit so that I can insure success.

I feel like my research has been returning some mixed results.  When it comes to fruiting, what is the rule about moisture.

I read a lot of older threads that talk about setting up fruiting chambers in a way that prevents the mycelium from coming into direct contact with the water sprayed into the fruiting chamber or condensation dripping from the lid.

The main concern seems to be with "drowning" the mycelium, but it would seem to me that dunking the mycelium for 24 hours would be drowning it as well, and if this method is effective, and you roll the cakes in dry verm after to provide a casing layer, then why is it so important not to spray them directly?

Also, i want to set up a humidifier to connect to my fc.  I have read that the filters are/are not necessary, some saying that the filters are an extra barrier against contams others saying that once the mycelium is established it doesn't matter.  Which is it?

Lastly, if I do hook up a humidifier to the fc, does it need to be on a timer or at least turned off from time to time?  I read about this a lot as well but have not seen much of a reasoning behind it... can there be such thing as too much humidity?

Follow this, it is up-to-date and works better than anything else for cakes.

Don't feel stupid, I made the same mistake when I first started

Spend the ten bucks and download the videos. They are the best resource for getting started.

Well I'm going to be downloading that come my next paycheck.

And I certainly did, haha I'm looking at it right now. I will say that it will take me some time to get through all of this!

I'm def bookmarking this for when I move on to bulk substrates, for now I will be searching through it for any and all information on pf cakes as I want to have my technique down before I move on to bigger and better things.
