How's this WBS lookin?
    #19403580 - 01/11/14 12:20 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

So this will be my first attempt at using WBS. I've heard many tumescent about certain standards with WBS such as not too much cracked corn or sunflower seeds. Not sure if anyone can tell me by the looks of the pics here how on par I'm lookin  as far as all that goes.

Also so where do I go from here. Do I just soak. Should I simmer also?  Any good go to teks on prepping WBS?  I'm gonna search but figured I'd throw it out there along with this post in case anyone can just point me in the right direction.

Ok.  How would that have helped me as far asking for an experienced eye of someone versed and familiar in using WBS wether or not judging by my pics of newly acquired WBS if I had decent stuff or not. I'm not sure when  I read people talk of cracked corn and sunflower seeds exactly what to look for. I personally am not clear at this time how much is too much just right or what have you.  Figured posting a pictorial with a lil request for someone opinion on said bird seed looked workable or not. But right on. I was making the post in regards to the pictures to see if someone could give me an idea about what I was working with.  The fact that I asked for someone to point me in the right direction just went along with said post. As I said I planned on searching up WBS teks. That still had nothing to do with my wanted some feedback on the actual WBS I acquired

Thanks for the link to franks WBS tek though!

Absolutely not. Never boil WBS. Simmer.

OP, that WBS will be fine.

The way I prep is to rinse very well with hot water, removing sunflower seeds where I can. Then soak in hot water for 24 hours. I change the water to keep it hot. After 24 hours, I change the water out again and bring it to a simmer. I simmer until some of the kernels start to bust. Usually the millet goes first. Once it's done, I drain it then set it on a towel with a fan on it to dry. Jar it up and PC for 90 minutes.

I actually just prepped about half a bag of that exact bird seed (amazon). It has a whole lot of sunflower seeds in it, which is ok, but once you give it a few good rinses, let it soak overnight (I've been giving them around a day to soak, just because its convenient for my work hours) and then put them on the stove in a pot, bring to a boil and then let it simmer for ~15-30 minutes. Once thats good, let it cool for a bit drain the water and then dump the seed and let it dry until you can't really pick up water from patting with a paper towel.

I'm looking for a better bird seed with less sunflower, twistedty, where did you get that economy mix bag?

Again, never boil your WBS. It causes kernels to explode. Bring it to a simmer and no more.

I dont boil my seed for any length of time. I put the WBS on the stove on high heat, stir regularly, once I have a little less than a boil, I will cover the pot and then bring the heat to medium low for nor more than 30 minutes.  -  I've yet to have problems doing this and I've been under the impression that <5-10% of kernels exploding was okay. Am I wrong in this assumption?

5-10% of your kernels busting is OK but not desirable. Mine actually don't burst at all anymore.

Well maybe not a boil you want it hot enough to be able to release alot of steam to dry the exterior, you dont need to boil/simmer your grains after a soak for any more than a minute

You don't need to simmer them, but you can get a lot more water in there than with just a soak. RR says the point of a soak is to hydrate, and the boil is just to cause steam. But he works with rye. We've got several different grains in WBS, which all need slightly different things to be properly hydrated.

I simmer my WBS for about 15-20 minutes and there is a very noticeable difference between that and grain that's just soaked.

I simmer my WBS for ten minutes, it does wonders for puffing up the grains.

I just make sure there is no cracked corn in it.

My tek says not to boil at all (just heat to a simmer and strain) because most WBS I see people using has cracked corn in it. But if there is none, it is beneficial to simmer like 36 recommends.

I find a simmer works fine even with some corn in it, just as long as there's not ridiculous amounts of it. I also change my soak water every few hours to keep it hot, though, so that may be the difference. By the time I actually simmer, there's basically no starch left. It gets converted to sugar and washed away.

Thanks guys.  I'm really kinda nervous using this but I gather I'm gonna give it a go.  I only have one master grain ATM and really hope I don't waste it on this stuff.  All my agar cultures grew out as I was just too busy over the holidays. That and my grain source is out of stock ATM so this was the best I could do.  What's the worse thatc an happen with all the corn?  I got rid of a lot of sunflower seeds  and holy shit there was a lot.

Corn just makes it sticky. I personally don't use gypsum, but only because I can't find it.

Thanks. This is the WBS after removing sunflower seeds. I removed virtually all of them fairly easily. However quite a bit if corn left over by the looks of it.

Just curious  arethe grains supposed to be kind of soft after the soak as is tye case with rye?  I know after a rye soak you can just mush it in between your fingers if you squeeze the grain  I just tried doing this w7th my wbs and its still on the fairly hard side  is this ok and normal
