Both maybe? It's non-fiction that we write ourselves into fictional stories. Or maybe that's fictional...
I don't see any separation between philosophy/self-help/spirituality really. I feel if we boil them all down, they're all attempts to make sense of phenomenon.

accountability for non-fiction imo. accountability runs from the author right down to sources. they need to be reliable and agreed as valid (even if writing something entirely new they need to use accepted techniques, sources and methods of argument). no doubt there are poorly constructed 'untrue' non-fictions..
a fiction author is not held accountable in the same way and their work is not held to be true or untrue in a factual sense..

I see. What about autobiographies? They use memory/experience as the sole source but are non-fiction yeah? I think that might be an important consideration also. Self-refererrential works.

yeh shit autobiographies are a weird one... the sole accountability i guess is the author and only the author can verify the truthfulness of their own memories
i think self referentiality is an interesting point .. fiction although maybe borrowing factual content tends to be entirely self referential and you couldnt say you understood it, really, without reading beginning to end, each part referring to each other.
non fiction is not like that really. you can read an odd chapter and know something.
the autobiography leans in the non fiction camp i guess because it is expected to align historically and the people in it (family etc) would be able to verify the stories (or they might publish their own version)
it is weird that even if it was totally untrue or greatly exaggerated it might still be considered a 'true' rendering of the author themselves

I'm leaning towards fiction if I had to pick
