Slow colonization/Stalled colonization
#19406316 - 01/11/14 11:34 PM (10 years, 19 days ago) |

So i attempted my first ever pf tek brf cakes.
I started with 12 cakes, i am now down to 10, and of those 10; 3 are 80-90% colonized, with the remaining ones stuck between 20-60% give or take.
Now the real problem here is that it has been 7 weeks since inoculation, and as far as i have read this is a long time right? I have obviously slipped up somewhere and i am not sure where.
I am a little disheartened but i would like some input from some more advanced mycologists as to where my pitfalls may lay.
Thankyou to anyone who can help me!

Do you have the tall half pint jars made by ball? Pictures help a ton.

I used drinking glasses with a wide mouth (not ideal i know) as i could not source any jars like i have seen in any teks. They are approx 250ml so 1/4 pint or there abouts i guess?
I will take some photos right now.

As you can see there is a large disparity between jars. I am still a novice, but i am worried i will not get any fruits at all after my patience.

They probably got a bacterial contamination or something. What do they smell like? I'd toss them and buy yourself some real jars and a pressure cooker.

Like dirt and chlorine. Not too pretty.
Are they beyond saving?

Definitely not what you should be smelling. It should smell like nothing but fresh mushrooms.

Is there anything i can do with my 1/2 colonized cakes or is throwing them all the only real option?
I have just invested in some 1/2 pint proper mason jars and am searching for a PC as i type this.

Anything that smells of anything but fresh mushrooms should be thrown out. If the weather in your location permits you can bury them outside and try to get a little out of them.

OK so i tossed them all.
But in doing so i dissected the little guys to get an idea of what was going on.
9 of them had little to no mycellium growing on the inside. 1 of them had some nice mycellium on the middle but it had just stopped growing altogether.
So i guess i had too much moisture content.
I've purchased 12 1/2 pint canning jars, and i will get a finer grade verm next time around.
Thanks for all the input guys. Hopefully next time i'll post a thread showing my goods and not asking questions!
