House froze, will my grow survive?
    #19346147 - 12/30/13 12:44 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Hey guys, first post after 2 years of creeping. Thank you all for the great info.

So, I just came home to find my house frozen. Thermostat off, and the water pipes all frozen (That's my other headache to deal with). I rushed to my bags I had colonizing and found my thermometer with them reading 20F, so below freezing. They were nocced up on the 23rd, and they could have been frozen on the 24th or 25th, and I just turned the heat back on on the 30th. So... Nocced up, colonizing for 2 days, froze for 5 days, thawing back up to 73F now. The spores were from S101, Golden Teacher in 5 bags, Great White Monster in the other 5.

So I'm wondering, has anyone had a similar situation where freshly nocced substrates were frozen for a few days then returned to temp? Did they survive? I've read about cell walls bursting in spore syringes and things like that, but would it be any different since they had 2 days to try to colonize? I'm basically just nervous and want someone to tell me what they think.

Thanks everybody, and happy new year!! :rocket:

Extra: I had a small monotub that I harvested from once, then dunked and rolled on the 20th that also froze. I'll post an update if this thing survives.

It would not surprise me in the least no matter what happens.  I could see this recovering as much as I could imagine it crapping out.  Hopefully for you you did not have any burst pipes.  There is not too much worse that can happen to a cold home than to have pipes burst.

Hopefully your water pipes will be OK.

I'm curious if any one has had frozen blocks of P. cubensis spawn recover.

Did the blocks of spawn or substrate freeze solid or bet below 0C?

I intentionally froze several agar plates with mycelium. You know, for funzies. After several weeks, the agar pretty much turned to goo when thawed, but all the mycelium perked right up when I transferred to a new plates and is currently colonizing spawn quite well. I bet you'll be fine.

Quick update in case anyone cared. My mono got a mold infection, I think it was due to too high of a temperature between the room and the heat it generated itself. I had it hidden up on some rafters and it was like 10 degrees hotter up there apparently. I lifted the whole cake out of the tub and it felt very warm to the touch. I threw that out. For the bags, about half of them have mycelium visible and spreading. I have high hopes for them.

As for the house, only one pipe broke and it was in my bedroom. Luckily, I had everything pushed to one side of the room for painting, and so water barely touched any of my stuff before I got the water main shut off and toweled up the mess. I intend to show my results in a new post once these bags come through. See you again in a few weeks.

Surprised no one else caught this, but with a syringe from S101 may be the cause of your moldy tub. If I believe that to be the right place that you are referring too.

Mycelium life cycles only slow down during cold snaps.  Maybe produce truffles.  When temps warm up, production goes back to normal.  There are mycelium colonies that have been alive for 10,000 years!  I believe there is a mushroom colony in RR's native state, WA, that has been around for 600 years
