Drug users life expectancy lower on average?

Overheard someone discussing this earlier, wasn't really sure what to think. Definitely very difficult to make a connection between the two due to all the variables, might also be impossible.
Still makes me wonder though. I know a massive number of young people taking "molly" on a regular basis now, as in at least once a month. Makes me wonder how this increased use will effect the brain down the line, if it even will effect it at all.
What do you guys think? Pretty open ended topic

If you're abusing many different drugs;powders, pills, and the like, then I would agree that your life expectancy would be lower.

Using drugs (especially hard drugs) greatly increases your lifespan by many years. I'm thinking 10+ if you're english. Maybe not americans so much? Guess we'll see. Last one standing loses IMO.

I think it depends on the drug but that most of the common ones decrease your life expectancy pretty significantly

Depends on which drugs, but the light that shines twice as bright burns half as long.

Absolutely correct. Enough with the "too many variables" bs.
Those who avoid the use of drugs will on average live longer than those who don't.
This is all just subjective.

I would say using drugs would absolutely decrease one's life expectancy on average, especially if you account all the young people that overdose on hard drugs into that average.

Maybe it could be because people that use drugs may also be more inclined than average to engage in other types of risky behavior?

Alexander Shulgin is 89 years old and has done more drugs than most.

Obviously. But we are not discussing if one person using drugs will decrease that person's life expectancy. We are looking at drug users cumulatively, in which case correlation would be useful.

But "drug users" is such an ambiguous group, it would be impossible to come to a clear conclusion. I feel this is an issue that HAS to be done on a more specific basis. By grouping all drugs users into one category of course the data will show a lowered life expectancy.
If you were to look at people who only eat mushrooms, that group would probably show a higher life expectancy than the all-encompassing group. This would mean that they are misrepresented when grouped as a whole. Therefor, the conclusion that their life expectancy will be lower than non-drug users would be false.
Users of certain drugs may lower their life expectancy by putting strain on their liver and kidneys. Certain people live high-risk lifestyles that are fueled by drug use. This doesn't represent the whole, however.
I don't think if someone dies from a heroin overdose it should affect the average either. I find it akin to someone dying in a car wreck- it is an accident. Accidents happen all the time. I feel the term "life-expectancy" should mean average age of natural(non-accidental) death.
But then again, are we going to factor in the people that take drugs to stay alive and increase our life expectancy? Or are we only talking illicit/recreational substance use/abuse. Do we include caffeine?

I would think that if your susceptible to damage from drugs it would be worse than someone who isnt. Its all in the DNA. You could live a perfect life with shit genes and youll still most likely die young if youve got bad history of cancer and shit. If anything drugs may mutate away these imperfections, or they might make worse ones

I'm going to say this is more than likely true of drug abusers.
Not sure about users though.

As a whole and excluding IV drugs, I'd say yes. Solely because people who use drugs tend to be risk takers.
