People asking for money at gas stations

So I was just at the gas station in my truck with my buddy after scoring some Heroin. My buddy ran into the QuikMart and I was sitting in the my car. A older gentlemen approached my door and said he and his wife almost ran out of gas and he has no money on him. He said he lived about 40 mins away. He asked if I could spare some money. I said I had no cash just a credit card. He said ok and walked away. I sat for a minute and then decided to help him out.(Probably because I was now high.) I walked up and said to pull his car to the pump and i'll give him some gas. I didn't want to give him cash because I feared it was just for drugs. I filled up his tank with $10, about 2.5 gallons. He said thank you and left. I felt good for a few minutes then started to regret what I did. I am one to help others when in need but for some reason I regret it now. Probably because when I need help I get dismissed and I'm starting get jaded. Anyone else Help others like this? And do you later regret it? How do you feel about strangers asking for cash?

Why would you regret it? On the off chance it was someone who was willing to humiliate himself by begging for $10 worth of gas he could afford himself, it's still just $10, not like it's a huge loss for you. Most likely it was a regular(ish) person in an embarrassing situation that you helped him out of, so good for you.

That's what I figured. I felt bad, I put myself in his position and did what I would hope someone else would do. But after a few mins I started contemplating the chance it was a scam. Well I hope it wasn't but if it was
So anyone else help out people at the gas station?

Gas station beggars are running rampant. Don't feel bad they are just people too. I think they are folks who are just loners that don't want to team up with other unfortunate people to make it along as a group. But that's wishful thinking, I bet. I never have money for either, but they seem like a good choice to put money on.

Probably a scam. This dude drivin a shitty ass honda pulls up and asks me for cash for gas. I am like nah I do not have any. He drives away. A few nights later my friend had the same experience at the same grocery store. I imagine he chose this spot because it is the more upscale grocery store in town. I bet he had shit luck at walmart. But yea fuck giving hard earned money to those who do not deserve it.

No it isn't, though some people do make out ok doing it. You make a lot more money working, and you don't have to subject yourself to something as humiliating as begging.

Yes it is, and I've witnessed a pretty good percentage of full time panhandlers make a lot of fuckin money. Of course, its all about location.
I'm too proud to panhandle, personally. Lots of people aren't ashamed of it at all, though.

Making $100 a day isn't good money IMO, especially not from begging. Also its not consistent and you need to look pretty pathetic in the first place to do good.

It's not great, but if you're panhandling, you probably live a pretty minimalist lifestyle, so $100/day is damn good. It's all relative. Plus, idk how you figure panhandling comes with $100/day salary cap, but that's a bad day in the right location. Also, IME pathetic works, dirty doesn't.
A couple miles from my house there's a guy with a prosthetic leg that panhandles, and he always has a big smile on his face. I've never talked to him, but I bet he makes out ok.

Man, I've had people do this to me who obviously wanted drugs and I gave them money. I mean come on, they must be in a really bad spot in life so if they want to use it to get high, I'm all for it. What does it matter where the money goes? You helped someone who needs it. You should be happy about that.

I don't give them money, but its not because I'm worried about what they'd do with it. If I give you something, its yours and you can do whatever you want with it. I don't give them money because if I need money, I find a way to make t without begging, and they could too. They just choose to sit around and scope out "suckers"

I've helped people way too much when I was fucked up on drugs, it can impair your decision making to whether they're manipulating you or if they really need it. The last time I was on heroin this dude kept me company and helped me put flyers up. He asked for 7$ so I gave him the money in dollar coins as well as a meal I made in 5 minutes.
Keep in mind how drugs affect your decision making, doesn't seem you fucked up too badly.

If they're going to express all extra money to the purchase of addictive drugs. Some people, the more money they get, the more drugs they do.
This very thing was shown on Drugs Inc. Someone going up to people at a gas station and collecting money to buy heroin.

Busking is giving people a service for free and asking for donations if you enjoy it. Panhandling is just asking people for money for doing nothing. At least dance or tell a funny story to try and earn a living. If someone can make me laugh I will give them $1, and I have. Funny homeless people can do well, drunks love to laugh.
The $100 a day is just a # I pulled out of my ass. I knew someone that used to beg in a mall near me and made like $140 average a day. Not bad money, but its a pathetic way to live.

The part that gets me was OP was buying heroin too. If you're buying heroin who are you to judge someone for possibly buying heroin with money you give them? and if you're already addicted to it wouldnt it be a lot more helpful to your well being than a cheeseburger?

The thing is, if they get an excess of money, they may go from a relatively minor habit to a major habit.

No it isn't. What I meant is that they may get an excess of money on occasion and they'll do more and experience an upsurge in their habit and they'll be in for a rude awakening when they run out.

So anyone else help out people at the gas station?
Once, when I was driving a service truck in Markham, Ontario, I found myself smoking a joint in the back lot of a busy gas station, when I noticed the attendant approaching my vehicle. I thought I was going to get told to fuck off.
When he was halfway across the lot, I noticed how his head was slightly cocked to one side, and he was developing a noticable spring in his step the closer he got to my truck. I had a pretty good idea what to expect.
"Only one thing makes you cough like that!"
The guy was originally from Alberta, and had been looking after his buddy's gas station, but his buddy had basically abandoned him there.
"I've been here for three months, and I can't find ANYBODY who will sell me any weed. This place is horrible."
The cat looked square as can be, he even had a moustache. I could see why he was having trouble scoring. I finished the joint with him, as the lineup for the pumps behind him started to stretch out into the street. I pointed the situation out to him, and he looked back at the pumps and said "Fuck em. Can I keep this roach? It'll come in real handy later."
I hooked him up with a few grams.
I went back there a few times to check up on the guy, but I never saw him again. I kinda think he smoked the weed I gave him and wondered to himself "what the hell am I doing here?", and then screwed off back to Calgary.

That story made me lol. I used to work at a few truck stops, and I sometimes helped truck drivers score drugs, and helped homeless guys score drugs/food, and sometimes let them chill in the driver's lounge, but I never gave them money.

Does anyone get this a bus stations? I get asked for fare for the bus the whole time then they just leave. I've had a few people -mostly young travellers- get really aggressive at me for not giving them money, so usually I just give them some change and pretend I have nothing else. Junkies are usually more friendly and will leave you alone if you say you have nothing to spare.

I had a friend who ran out of gas and his sister told him she'd come get him but she never did and he had to go around asking people for money until he could afford the gas to get home.
One time I ran out of gas on my motorcycle (I don't have a fuel gauge and forgot I still had it in reserve) and a guy saw me doing the walk of shame down the sidewalk with my bike and offered to get me some gas from a gas station. He was a fellow motorcyclist and gave me a ride in his car to the nearest gas station and he even bought a gas can I could use to fill up (he said he needed one anyways) and gave me a ride back to my bike. I was so thankful, he told me to just pass it on if I ever see anyone else in need.
