HEPA filter

Hi, this is my first post, but I have been lurking long enough to design my flow hood. I ordered my HEPA on 12-6 and it just arrived a few minutes ago. I haven't seen any of them in person until now, so I wanted to get you guys to look at it. It just doesn't look like what I am used to seeing online. Also, the pleats are torn, and it doesn't appear to be shipping damage. Let me know what you think, before I start the process of trying to send it back.

contact them immediately. these filters are made of spun glass. they are very fragile. send them the pix and they will likely send you a new one without you having to return that one. I only buy filters from FP. Every other place i have ordered from sends out shit like that.

I have already sent an email with pics, thanks. Does the filter look right though? It looks like very wide spacing compared to what I see that you guys have. Will this be a problem, assuming I get a replacement? The filter is a 24x36 for reference.
Oh, and it does seem to be shipping damage. You can see where the box was hit in the center of one end. I guess it flexed the filter enough to tear it.

wow that's fucked. it won't be coming out of their pocket since it was damaged in transit. so they shouldn't hassle you too much.

That filter model is good to go aside from the damage. It is six inches thick? if they let you keep it, you can silicone caulk those holes and make a second hood. Put it in the antechamber or room outside the lab to scour the air.

Yeah, it's the 99.99% 6" thick one. It would take alot of silicone to fix all those holes, lol. The pictures don't show all of the damage. At least I have it to go ahead and build the hood. Hopefully they will send a replacement soon.

definitely do not use that filter, you can insist on a new filter for sure! there must be no damage at all, what did it cost you?

No good for sterile work but still good for scouring the air if you caulk the holes. Use colored silicone caulk so you can see it and apply it with a popsickle stick I doubt they will want it back.

I'll try and contact them again tomorrow when they're open. I guess if I ever get the lab finished I could repair this one and use it to clean the room air. My main concern right now is just getting a replacement. A little over $200 isn't easy to come by for me. Thanks for all of your advice. I'll start a build thread when I get started.

I just spoke with them and they said they would build and send a replacement within 5 business days. She was very nice and helpful, and didn't request the filter to be sent back.

No it is not good. HEPA is a scientific standard that must be met in order to call your filter HEPA or "True HEPA". If it becomes damaged, there is no way to know if the integrity of the structural components are still in tact. The 99.97% filtration of all particles over .3 microns goes out the window. Which is important considering Trichoderma Hazadrium (Spelling?) is .5 microns. It is no longer a filter acceptable for scientific applications.

I wanted to post an update. My replacement filter arrived today... damaged again. Called them and they offered a refund this time. Not sure if the shipping company is that bad or if the packaging should be better, but as soon as the refund hits my bank account I'm ordering from FP.

Wondering what use these could have... since you practically got them for free.

silicone the shit out of them and use them as a way to clean the room adjacent to your lab. NOT FOR STERILE CULTURE THOUGH. WE keep hepas running 24/7 in our myco supply store. Really helps keep the lab particulate matter down.
