I have a cheap Android phone with a sliding keyboard (Kyocera Rise.) If it breaks or I lose it, no big deal. It's served my needs pretty well so far though.

I see. Maybe you should get a Galaxy Xcover 2? It's supposedly shock-proof.. I just bought me a Galaxy Core Plus, and I really like it. At 150€ it really was a bargain

Depends on what you wanna do with your phone.
I've always had an iphone and was gonna pick up an android this time around. I tried out quite a few at the store, Galaxy S4, HTC One, and I'm gonna be honest, none of em impressed my like the new iphone did. I know the androids can be fully customized but the interface is just not as user friendly in my experience, also messed around with some friends android. Just doesn't feel as fluid and, at least in my opinon, the iphone camera is the nicest looking. The HTC One was close but a but the colors were a bit more realistic/duller, which I'm not a huge fan of.
But, in defense of the android, it is truly much easier to customize and download unlocked apps like premium spotify and pandora for free

This is my favorite phone.
LG Quantum

Its got the simplicity and beauty of the Windows Phone 7.5 OS combined with a nice, pixel-dense touchscreen. But the best part is the slide-out landscape keyboard. Its made surfing on Shroomery mobility SOOO much better. Its a 2010 phone, so its a little data. But mine still feels pretty advanced. Of course, there are better, faster phones. But if you like typing on keyboards more than touchscreens, check this one out.
I would recommend a WP8 phone with a QWERTY keyboard, but sadly they havent made one yet! Someday maybe.
Ive had it for a few years now, and I still love it. Best overall features and easy of use, in my opinion.

Yeah mine has the same form factor. It's a bit like having a tiny laptop.

Lumia 1020, because fuck you I buy whatever I want. Hate almost all Androids I've ever touched, had iPhone 5/4s/4 and grew tired of them. Build quality tends to run shittier among Androids, but fanboys swear by um.. something, about them so I guess they're a viable choice.
Go spend half an hour in the store playing with stuff until you find one that you like.

thanks guys.
Got a galaxy S3 for 1 year now
it turns off when I keep it in my pocket, as the battery terminal came loose, normal prblem on it it often loses signal when talking / people cant hear me due to bad signal quality , common on samsung 3g doesnt work inside buildings or cars , no GPS either there often, especially inside buildings (any building), and often inside large cities too - worse 3g conn than most phones
but it can do anything a PC can, it is better surfing on than my PC, faster just a bit bad for phone stuff
calendar sucks, better on nokia phones... annoying calendar annoying stopwatch too, not as good as on any nokia
my screen cracked after 4-5 months all across it, 3 large cracks that goes through the whole screen even though screen is uncrackable they say... dropped it onto a carpet from 50-70cm height or so, and it landed on the corner
another problem with android is, you definitely need to root it even if you root it you dont control it unless you install custom software on it
the manufacturerer has installed backdoor on your phone if you run android it will autoupdate without your permission to new samsung software i.e.
but I think there are backdoors in any nokia too maybe... remote listening i.e.
battery life is terrible... 18 hours with normal use max, sometimes only 5-7 hours if used a bit always keep a charger with you
nokia is better durability, much longer battery life (5-7 days often), better phone features (games, calendar, stopwatch, faster dialing, better signal quality, never drops calls etc.)
you can destroy a SGS3 in a second if you drop it onto concrete, but if you drop a nokia 3310 nothing happens
a benefit with a cheaper phone is you dont have to worry about losing it either, if you lose a smartphone you lose a lot of money, same if you drop it onto cement outside..
buy what fits your use, SGS3 is smart to look at,but not a too good phone, good portable computer (almost PDA like)
if I could redecide I might not have bought a SGS3, not sure it is good for browsing the web, but not good for phone calls my nokia 6310 I got for free from one I know was much better for anything a phone should do, incl bluetooth internet on pc nokia 6100 was also a nice phone... and 3310 was a classic, almost miss that one
the SGS3 has a very nice camera for outside and indoors sometimes except in very low light, the camera is almost as good as a portable digital camera of good quality (canon ixus 750 i.e.) - just the LED light is not as good as a flash , worse colors
so good camera, good browsing (best there is for phones) bad phone software, but has gotten better recently (faster), its not too bad but using an old nokia is much faster and easier to dial with
and really bad battery life... almost a joke... would you buy a phone that lasts 4-8 hours battery only often? , often considered returning it due to battery life, as soon as I bought it

then I might as well buy a nokia 3310 ;-)
because then SGS3 is not really pocketsize anymore IMO, its almost a little too big at times often it only fits in my jacket, the size is not optimal all the time I think
its a tradeof , want PDA features, or just phone features? SGS3 is a reasonably large phone, larger than most
my old phone was half the size, but a little thicker (nokia 6310)

I dont have these problems with mine, I work in a building with a lot of sources of interference and live in an area with poor reception but still have very few issues with reception.

I like the iPhone 5s the most personally. I really like the smaller form factor compared to all of the newer Android devices which are absolutely massive. It also has the best camera and build quality of any phone on the market.
If I were to get an Android phone it would be a Nexus 5. You can get it unlocked, off-contract, direct from Google for $350.

IOS does the same is not a good argument for selling out your freedom ;-)
its like saying, windows controls me but does what I want to do most of the time, so there is no reason to use linux to be fully free
SG3 has its antenna in the bottom, so you have to hold it on the sides if you want to call in bad signal areas often if you hold in the bottom, no signal, no phone signal - no 3g signal or only 1 bar signal if you hold on the sides you get 2-3 extra bars
iphones have that issue too
old nokias dont, they often have the antenna in the top iirc.. much better signal quality usually
but I could still call in most areas with my SG3, nokia just has better signal quality always as a phone
its a tradeof, do you want a smartphone or just a phone for phone stuff that does that well? a pda is not a good phone necessarily, but it will do phone stuff reasonably well and better in some cases
being able to google find a number is often useful on a smartphone, old nokias cant do that ... but you are out of battery anyway always with a SG3 unless you carry your charger, so google wont be possible ;-)
*** btw if you use a case with your SG3 you wont have the same antenna issues likely since then you wont interfere with the signal by holding in the bottom, the casing protects the signal I heard... but dunno signal isnt too good, but its useable except no 3g in many buildings, where HTC has 4 bars signal right next to me... htc desire 3g is almost useless in many places, bad 3g conn
I often only get GPRS signal where people with HTC and same subscription(ISP) get 4 out of 5 bars 3g signal GPRS is useless for surfing/doing stuff on the net, and even the GPRS conn is unreliable inside buildings often
maybe early SG3 model... but google says I am not alone

the battery times I mentioned with my SG3 is when I got a dock on my table
if I dont have a dock and maybe forget to charge it, it runs out as soon as I leave my house
battery life is the biggest downside with a smartphone, and SG3 is one of the most power hungry of them all + the 3g conn is one of the worst there is, I would google samsung galaxy S3 3g conn problem before buying, or you might get unlucky
those 2 downsides are pretty big downsides IMO
but I would never buy an apple phone
if you want a stable 3g conn you might need to buy another phone than an S3 or S4 there are better phones for 3g conn I heard.. HTC definitely seems to have better 3g signal than my SG3 (google is your friend...)

I've been looking for a new phone too. If you have a service besides Verizon look into a phone called motorola G, it just came out and was made to be sold without needing a contract. It's really clean for the low cost
