The PC lid usually had a mechanism for tightening it down and creating a perfect seal around the edge.
Some of them have rubber gaskets. Do you know what brand you have?
Don't be using rags.
Wait, I thought you said in the first post that you DIDN'T have a pressure cooker, only crock pots? So which is it? Are you using a pressure cooker or are you steaming in a regular old pot?
I also don't think those jars you have are ready. I wouldn't waste those spores testing them. You can get away with steam sterilization for LC's, it will work fine. Don't need a pressure cooker, just a pot with water.
Don't mean to sound harsh but I don't think you really know exactly what you're doing yet. What method are you using?

Edit: Reread other posts.
No your pressure cooker should not release steam from the sides of the lid. It should be released from the hole in the top. I've never heard one whistle but it can be really loud.
Once steam starts releasing from the hole in the top you need to put a toggle weight on. Once pressure builds completely the weight will start rocking and yes it will vent steam from the hole as the weight rocks.
There is no need to get a PC with a dial to tell you the pressure it's holding. Unnecessary. Just buy a presto canner from mal wart and read the directions it comes with.

Nevermind, I got the rocker to rock.
Realized how to create the seal in the last 15 minutes I'll be able to tend to it. Lol.
I have two popcorn jars and a one BRF cake atm. I was soaking the popcorn when the vermiculite arrived in the mail, lol. It came in one week, but I expected it to be three weeks.
I'll be making BRF cakes after my LC gets nice and white, but I think I'll be experimenting with grains once I have enough LC to waste.
This first batch will be with spores.

You could probably use that internet thing to find the manual for the PC and do some figuring out sort of stuff you know.

Welp, everything looks okay.
And I did look up a little bit on pressure cookers. After mine was already on the stove.
One of my popcorn's shattered (go me) but the other one has lovely signs of growth a week in. :3
And the LC looks like it has dandruff in it... I assume that's a good thing, too.
