duotub wbs to coir verm and gypsum

After 2 unsuccessful attempts, first with 1/2 pint cakes and then with bulk trays in a sgfc, I'm thrilled to finally have some success. I love watching these things grow, its truly a miracle of nature. I used 3 pint jars 3/4 full of wbs to start off with, and steam sterilized them for about 9 hours, just to be safe. I saw RR mention it could be done that way, but found no accounts of anyone doing so. I'm quite devoid of money for a pressure cooker, and I'm happy to say it worked out for me this way.
I put 2 half inch holes in the lid of the quart jars, and filled with wbs that had been soaked for 16 hours or so. I used two layers of Tyvek (from our postal friends) with polyfill in between for lids, and used the real lids for coasters. I put a thick knitted oven mitt on the bottom of a large pot, and placed the jars inside with water about 2/3 the way up the sides of the jars, then heated the water to a boil for 9 full hours. I had to periodically refill the pot with water as it would begin to boil off. Once they cooled for 12 hours I inoculated the jars at both holes with Treasure Coast (using lots of hand sanitizer and rubbing alcohol, as well as a face mask and rubber gloves) about 2 cc's per hole. They began colonizing in 3 or 4 days, and were fully colonized in two weeks.
I wanted a simple substrate, so I did some research and settled on a coir/verm/gypsum mixture. I wanted to do 60/35/5 or so but I just decided to use all I had left and it ended up more like 75/20/5. I decided to do a 1:4 ratio of spawn to substrate. Since the total volume of that is fairly small, I decided not to use a big rubbermaid for a monotub. I read that a 4-5" substrate depth is ideal so I chose a container that was better fit, which ended up being two of the drawers to a cheap little chest of drawers one on top of the other, duotub style.
I put three 1.5 inch holes on the bottom tub, one on each side but one. The drawers were brittle, so to drill the holes I used a 1/4" drill bit to drill about a dozen smaller holes around the circumference of my desired hole size, then used a knife to break the plastic in between each hole. It wasn't pretty but it was cheap and functional. I made three holes like this on the top of the top bin too(that is - the bottom if it were right side up serving its drawer funtion). Then I covered each hole with a layer of gorilla tape on the inside and outside, and covered the entire bottom 5" of the bottom tub with duct tape to prevent side pinning.
Using good sterile procedures (including lots of lysol this time) I put the substrate and spawn into the bottom tub, making a substrate and spawn parfait and then mixing them up a bit with my gloved hand. I saved a bit of spawn and substrate to sprinkle an unmixed layer of each on top of the mixture, spawn first, then substrate on top. I put the top tub over the bottom, and taped them together leaving only a tiny downward facing gap open (but with polyfill) where the two tubs didn't fit perfectly.
The mycelium colonized fairly slowly, I think because I live in a basement room that is difficult to keep warm. Temps were around 65 most of the time. In a little over a month I checked 'em and holy tits there were little pinheads! probably about a dozen at first. They have been growing like mad and the biggest now are over 2" tall. I think I'll be harvesting soon, I'm so excited I might pee.

Harvest day! I really didn't expect this many fruits of this size. I'm drying them with baked epsom salt in a tupperware, and I've got a couple spore prints in the making. I had 10.23 wet grams of aborts, and 449.14 grams wet of mature fungal fun.

So I just found out that I should fan dry before epsom drying, but I'm kind of unclear on how I should fan dry... does this look ok? I would hate for them all to go bad! Please help!

That should work. when I fan dried I put my fruits on a table with a fan blowing air across them. That should work though.

Nice! Can't believe it worked after the 9 hours of steam. You will love it once you get a PC.

I won't leave you behind son! Not when we are so close!
Any idea how long this kind of set up should take? I need to relocate tomorrow unfortunately

it depends on how dry your house is. If you split the stems they will dry faster.

yep steaming works fine, i can actually get more done in a day with my stock pots then my pc, but running 2 stock pots and a pc kicks ass, if you split the stems it will go much faster

I read of people setting the oven on the lowest temp, with the door cracked open, and a fan circulating the oven air to dry fruits also. But the strait fan should work fine let sit for 24 hours then check for dryness.

24 hours should get them dry enough for a desiccant chamber
