shroomhunting with uncle Paid
    #1937974 - 09/21/03 01:24 PM (20 years, 6 months ago)

so i went to visit Paid at his country pile in the leafy English countryside today, and we spent the day foraging and looking up fungi in a big textbook. Paid had the camera, and took loads of great shots.

there were fungi everywhere - we found some mycena spp. that bleed juices - a black one and a scarlet juiced one, puffballs, sulphur tuft, brown birch bolete, honey fungus, laetiporus sulphurius (chicken), and a few other notables...

Paid? Are you there? have you got some pics to show us?

Probably Phaeolus schweinitzii, if it was growing next to pine trees.

Very nice.

On your red bleeding Mycena - if you kept it, look very closely at the gills and see if the gill edges are darker than the rest of the gill or not. My references list two Mycenas that bleed reddish latex - one has marginate gills and the other doesn't.

If the gills *are* marginate, then it should be Mycena sanguinolenta. The gill margin should be a dark reddish brown.

If the gills are *not* marginate, then it should be Mycena haematopus, which is one of the more common Mycenas.

Happy mushrooming!

hmmm. from the source i was reading, i thought either the sanguinolenta or another, the crocata. it did not look physically anything like the haematopus. This was using the Phillips' GB Mushroom guide. Do you happen to know if this has been cultivated? I'd love a go at it. We didn't keep one, but we're going back after the rains.

1234 - hopefully Paid is eating that ChickenOTW today. We want cooking tips, though. And that froggy was a cutie - that was cut from a larger pic with a hand in it for sizing. And the amanitas were left to grow larger. Doh!

Yep i think your right "Phaeolus schweinitzii" the brown
dye fungi. It was growing in mixed woodland, but if i remeber
corectly it was growing 2 foot from a large pine.
Good id thanks :-)
