We use magnetic stirrers all the time at the lab. Normally the actual stirrer (stir-bar as it's called) is a Teflon coated magnet. And you're right--when you're stirring something in a flat bottomed container (like an Erlenmeyer flask) you use a straight, rod shaped magnet. When stirring in something like a round bottom flask, they have magnets that are football shaped. The radius of the stir bar matches the radius of the flask.

so I went by the thrift store today and I found a 12v power adapter for some toy laptop thing, anyways, brought it home and it works like a charm.
creates quite a strong vortex so I guess the next upgrade will be a potentiometer. That way I can make it go slow in the initial stages of development and then speed it up to break up the mycelium when I need to extract.
but that can wait because at least it's operational.
victory is mine!
now if only my current lc jar had a brass nail in it...

Yeah you could use a potentiometer as a simple voltage divider to control the speed of the fan. It won't be energy efficient or precise, but whatever it works.
Maybe look into fan controllers made for PC cases. They are cheap ($5.00) and will control the speed much better. (using Pulse Width Modification) Radio shack will probably charge you that much just for the pot.

Oh well shit I was unaware that there was another way haha thanks! There's not too many radioshacks around where I live anymore I know a few closed down a few years back but I do have a microcenter its like the size of best buy and has everything ever made for computers ever so I'm assuming they would have it..?

Yeah microcenter would probably have one, I know that Frys carries electronic components.
Microcenter would definitely have one of those fan controllers, I would buy one of those, they will do a better job then just dropping the voltage on the fan. Shouldn't have to pay over $10.00 for one.

Hell yeah found one for 7 at fry's placed order for store pickup and getting it tomorrow. Thanks CMOS! Quote:
monoculture said: It should not be so hard, just buy a stirring magnet coated with pfte (flea)for inside the jar. for the rest: HERE
And where do I find one of these magnets short of ordering on the internet?
Also(and I pose this to all of you but mainly to john in wi) what shape does it need to be in if I'm using a jar since the bottoms are kind of convex? My 1.5 in. brass nail worked in the half pint jar but not ones with wider bottoms.
