Freeloading on bookstores
    #19397417 - 01/10/14 05:46 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Do large bookstores have policies in place to prevent people from freeloading and just hanging around, reading the books all day. Especially in areas with people with no money -- although not necessarily homeless or dirty. One time when I was semi-homeless, I found that I was able to spend a significant amount of time reading books at a large bookstore. I only went sometimes, though, out of respect.

One thing I noticed about the barnes N noble by me is that there are no chairs for this very reason! Because its all old people where I live. There are the benches by the magazines and a couple scattered chairs at the end of some rows in odd places. At other Barnes N nobles there are way more chairs. Theres even a spot in the center of the store where there is a large group of them... But not at the one by me!

Are you suggesting that old people are more likely to freeload?

Why not just go to library if you want to read books. at least you can take them home.

Yeah a library makes more sense for this purpose, they actually want you to hang around without buying anything.

When the big "coffee shop and couches" style bookstore chains were first popping up around here in the late 90's/early 2000s or so, they definitely had a lot more chairs etc than they do now. They want to give off the impression of an inviting atmosphere but they probably don't really want people taking advantage of it too much.

In Barnes & Noble, Very much so! They treat book stores like libraries
