Not the black rapper, I live in the hood kind. I'm talking about the original gangsters like in the movie goodfellas. I would imagine they are still in Italy/Sicily, but are there any still in the states like in New York?

No. Because, unlike the movie Goodfellas, time has moved on and these things are no longer relevant in this world. Plenty of douchebags wearing fedoras, though. Now if only someone would mow them down with a Thompson, the illusion would be complete.

The mafia is still present in New Jersey, New York and Philadelphia, in fact, last year they sentenced a lower level boss to prison time in Philly. So yes, the mafia is still extant, although their influence and relevance have waned considerably since the 1960s. If you're looking for Goodfellas and Godfather levels of romanticized gangster bullshit, then no, that doesn't really exist. The Sopranos is not so far from reality though.

Not really. This romanticized concept of gangsters is fucking stupid. It takes any criminally-inclined moron to be a gangster, because that's what gangsters have been throughout time.
This whole notion of Godfather/Goodfellas types is just asinine. They were movie characters for a reason. Gangsters are gangsters, no matter the color of their skin or the label on their clothes, and they're worthy of exactly zero accolades and superlatives.
I can give you that, yes, most boys do grow up to be spineless man-children who'd be better off used as sustenance for the poor. That's for fucking certain.

I'm not saying mobsters were GENTLEMEN but they were Men, and the last generations have produced very few of those. Dudes are more flexible to varied conditions than Men but Men have more endurance in the limited things they do. Men typically have a non negotiable, rigid set of values which they exert on their world (Zappaisgod and myself come to mind) which isnt always a good thing but it gets reliable, consistent results whereas dudes change any way the wind blows and aren't particularly anchored on a moral or proper conduct stance. People like Zappa and me are hardly compatible on many subjects but we do have overlaps, for instance that to us a thief, is a thief, is a thief, whereas to a dude it makes a fundamental difference whether you swipe something from walmart or steal from your grandma.
That loose interpretation of morality "taking something from walmart isnt stealing because walmart are corporate scum that steal from us and exploit their employees" as opposed to "any act of stealing makes you a thief" is something that very much increased in younger generations. People like Zappa and me have never been like that, and in our older generation it was an uncommon way of looking at things.
Of course gangsters DID steal. But they knew that what they did was wrong in every way and in the case of the Mafia even that it was sinful to be like that, they didnt mitigate it by undermining their sense of what is right or wrong with loose definitions.
Times were simpler pre-internet and people were more rigid and black-and-white in their principles and ethics because of it.
I caught a whiff of those times anbd an somewhat of a man, but I am decidedly more of a dude than my father was and that won't change as I grow older. Its a generational transition.

Ive had the honor of hearing some crazy ass stories about the mafia from one of my patients.
He grew up in Sicily, and he said all the toke he would try to be recruited in somehow but he said as long as you told them no and you weren't interested, they'd leave you alone. This was from like the 30s and 40s. He also said that sometimes they'd come to your house to see if you needed help with anything and he said he would respectively decline their help Bc once you ask or need help from the mafia, they expected shit from you from that point on.
He also thought that his brother owed them money at one point because he turned up dead, possibly had been run over by his own tractor (he was a farmer for years and never had any incidents and then all of a sudden hes dead under his own tractor lol)
The stories my old people tell me are awesome haha

Are you kidding me? Mafia is still a powerful organization. Both in the US and in Italy. And when nobody knows that it exists, when it goes unnoticed, it is stronger than ever.

There is no right or wrong, no morality or ethics. That's all abstract reasoning with no bearing in objective reality.
I was stealing and wheeling before I even knew what the internet was, so I'll take the whole thing as a compliment to my personal intelligence in being able to see through societal norms without need of such a tool.

They were weakened considerably by the RICO statutes. And as mentioned new groups like the Russians moved in with much less fear of the consequences. They think U.S. prisons are a joke. And the Latin American and Asian organized crime makes drug money that was only dreamed about by the Mafia.
When it comes to the old Italian Mafia, I wouldn't lump together the stories of the Godfather and Goodfellas. The Godfather was a completely fictional story about the most important Mafia boss in the country. Goodfellas was a nonfiction story about mid level thugs, and you don't even see the boss of the family. The three main characters are not made men, and their boss, Paulie is just a neighborhood boss. That's why you see all the cigarette smuggling and stealing coats. There were only 2 big time thefts in the story. Also the fictional Mafia of the Godfather was based on the concept of the family business. The nonfiction Goodfellas exposes this myth. There was no family business. Just small groups of guys stealing, and kicking a percentage up to Paulie, who kicked up stairs to the boss. There were probably hundreds of little businesses, not one big one.
The foreigners probably come much closer to the godfather myth. People like Pablo Escabar and Asian drug lords make countless billions in a single industry, but these bosses almost never enter the U.S.

Yeah they show you the Kansas City bosses in Casino. Goodfellas is more about the street hoods where Casino is the next step up in the organization......I think The Departed shows what lies in between. All fiction based loosely around real life events.
