Of course gangsters DID steal. But they knew that what they did was wrong in every way and in the case of the Mafia even that it was sinful to be like that, they didnt mitigate it by undermining their sense of what is right or wrong with loose definitions.
Times were simpler pre-internet and people were more rigid and black-and-white in their principles and ethics because of it.
There is no right or wrong, no morality or ethics. That's all abstract reasoning with no bearing in objective reality.
I was stealing and wheeling before I even knew what the internet was, so I'll take the whole thing as a compliment to my personal intelligence in being able to see through societal norms without need of such a tool.

They were weakened considerably by the RICO statutes. And as mentioned new groups like the Russians moved in with much less fear of the consequences. They think U.S. prisons are a joke. And the Latin American and Asian organized crime makes drug money that was only dreamed about by the Mafia.
When it comes to the old Italian Mafia, I wouldn't lump together the stories of the Godfather and Goodfellas. The Godfather was a completely fictional story about the most important Mafia boss in the country. Goodfellas was a nonfiction story about mid level thugs, and you don't even see the boss of the family. The three main characters are not made men, and their boss, Paulie is just a neighborhood boss. That's why you see all the cigarette smuggling and stealing coats. There were only 2 big time thefts in the story. Also the fictional Mafia of the Godfather was based on the concept of the family business. The nonfiction Goodfellas exposes this myth. There was no family business. Just small groups of guys stealing, and kicking a percentage up to Paulie, who kicked up stairs to the boss. There were probably hundreds of little businesses, not one big one.
The foreigners probably come much closer to the godfather myth. People like Pablo Escabar and Asian drug lords make countless billions in a single industry, but these bosses almost never enter the U.S.

Yeah they show you the Kansas City bosses in Casino. Goodfellas is more about the street hoods where Casino is the next step up in the organization......I think The Departed shows what lies in between. All fiction based loosely around real life events.
