done building flowhood, got a question about the air flow. (UPDATE: PICTURES)
    #19393230 - 01/09/14 11:21 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

So I just ran my flow hood for the first time. I did the lighter test a few inches away from the filter, and it bent to a 45-60 degree angle, as it should. However I was expecting more airflow, as i can barely feel the air moving. Is this normal?

Its not too hard. My drafting skills are paying off :p. The hardest part was having the people at home depot cut precise measurements for the enclosure around the box since you have to account for the thickness of the wood. Today is the third day, it could be done quicker but I'm taking my time measuring twice and cutting once.

But anyway. Its not supposed to feel like a fan is it? Cause that's sorta what I was expecting.

I don't believe so. More like a soft breeze.

But continuous, not choppy.

Never used one so hopefully someone else will inform you.
What is the rough estimate cost?

this cost more than it should...
240 for a 18x24 from fungiperfecti
and 160 for the blower. and a little more for wood and materials. less than 450.

Im sure you can do better though.

Yes.

You're going to be working in the area immediately in front of the filter.  I like to work in the very center of the work area only 1" or so from the filter face.

You could prolly do it a hundred+ dollars cheaper. I got the filter from fungi perfecti because they are made for mycology use, and i didnt want to skimp on that. The blower i got on ebay for about 150, If youre lucky you can find one around 100. I couldnt though. Thats about it.

I used stonesuns flowhood build as a guide, didn't really follow it too closely.

Would it be ok to add a window screen in front of the HEPA? Or would this serve as a contamination vector? I say this because i want to preserve the pleats.

I was thinking something along the lines of that. Have it on a hinge so i can fold it down into a desk like thing. Or make a little sliding tray at the bottom. but yea.

I do have some crappy cardboard covering it for the moment though.
