Why is grain quart jar prep diff than half pint

With half pints you punch four small holes and put gorilla tape over when pressure cooked.
How come when you use quart jars with WBS you punch one 1/4 inch hole and use tyvek and polyfill?
C an you do it the same as the half pints or do yo need to do it different because the spore solution can be shaken around and dispersed easier with a big hole? (like holding the syringe at an angle would be easier with a larger hole)

With BRF cakes (half pint with 4 holes) you are following the "PF Tek" which uses a dry layer of vermiculite to keep out contams. You don't shake this.
With WBS you don't have a contam barrier so the jar needs to be sealed off from contams

because:
You don't shake BRF jars. They use a dry vermiculite layer on top of the BRF as the filter.
Grain jars get shook a few times, a dry verm layer would do nothing at all.
However:
One could remove the dry verm layer from the brf cake, and replace with another type of filter with a self healing injection port and Gas exchange ports. YOU NEED Gas Exchange no matter what, and it needs to be filtered in some manner.
Polyfill is in most methods a GAS EXCHANGE port AND a filter. An open hole in any lid NEEDS filtration.
Typically:
BRF cakes use vermiculite as the filter, and the 4 holes for gas exchange AND inoculation.
Quarts of grain use polyfill as both a filter, gas exchange AND at times for inoculation.
Some use a STILL AIR BOX and can open the grain lid entirely and inoculate.
Hopefully this is helpful to you and your studies. This is MY understanding of the methods and the reasoning why.

What he said ^^^^^^^ No contam barrier. Larger jar needs more gas exchange as well and most people only use a single inoculation point with grains and then shake them up.

no. A soccer flag will not work.
Micropore tape, polyfill or Synthetic filter disks are about the only substitutes to tyvek.
You can also find tyvek at your local post office usually for free in the form of those airmail envelopes.

I already did answer. Don't try and use a soccer flag. lol That'll be an automatic fail. Do you not at least have micropore tape lying around?
