Kitchen on FIRE...
    #19397089 - 01/10/14 02:22 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

I mix little things up all the time.  Like the Black Eyed Peas and the Red Hot Chillie Peppers.  Like crock pots and pressure cookers.

So, when I realized today that I had three crock pots and no pressure cookers, I decided that I'd just just use a big pot with a lid.

Loaded it up with jars, put some water in it, and waited a few feet away as my first batch of jars sanitized.

Some steam came out the top of the lid when everything started boiling along, tried to fix it in a few different ways, but none of them worked so I decided not to bother.

After a while, the jars popped and I thought that was normal so I didn't fret.  When it started smelling like smoke, I didn't worry, either.  I thought maybe I had gotten some vermiculite onto the burners and that was what I was smelling.

But after 45 minutes, it smelled like something was ON FIRE.
So, I lifted the lid to check my babies and I SAW FLAMES.

Put the fire out, one of my $5 plastic LC lids got ruined but whatever.

Do I need to sanitize everything again, this time properly?

Odds are that I'm just gonna knock up my jars anyway, but some advice would be cool, especially to look back on if my jars start turning green.

Were you attempting to sterilize an LC in a crockpot?

Did your pot run out of water??
What was on fire??
It sounds like you probably burnt your substrate, at least on the bottom of the containers.  I'd start over from scratch.

pot must've run dry in order for it to catch on fire. at least according to physics as I understand it..

Next time, put water in the pot first.  We sterilize with steam, not dry heat.  It's impossible for a plastic lid(which suck balls in the best of conditions) to catch on fire when surrounded by steam.

He put water in.

I think you didn't put enough though.  It sounds like your jars were sitting directly on the bottom of the pot?  Or were they raised up out of the water?

Also, I think he may have been trying to use a pot to pressure cook. Hence the being worried about steam release.

I lined the bottom of the pan with the rings from jar lids and a dishcloth.  (The dishcloth is what burst into flames.)

I had 2 honey LCs, 1 BRF cake, and 2 popcorn jars in the pot.

At first, I thought that I put way too much water in and that it would boil over into into the tops of my jars, so after about the first 10 min (this is before the 45 minute period that they should have been properly steaming) I checked the jars, decided the water was too high, and siphoned a bunch out with a turkey baster.

I must have run out of water.  Or something.

One of my jars was burned on the bottom.  I can already see mycelium growing in the LC jar I decided to knock up anyway (the jar I threw out was the other LC jar) and I put spores in the BRF cake anyway, too.
If they don't colonize, I won't loose any sleep.

But the other two popcorn jars (again, I won't loose any sleep over these two, either.  I started soaking the popcorn when I thought I wouldn't have access to vermiculite for about a month.) are in a jank pressure cooker on my stove right now that I borrowed from my sister-in-law.  This pressure cooker has no gauge though, and still seems to leak steam, but it has a snap-on lid.  I'm chilling in the kitchen again, like I did last night, encase anything starts smoking...

Are they supposed to leak steam?  What setting should I keep my stove at while I have this shit in there, for potentially hours?

Right now it's at half heat, and but I'm scared of too much steam escaping.

I'll probably get a better pressure cooker for the next time I try this.

But it's all a learning process, eh?

Jank pressure cooker went dry, but when I saw, I put more water in.  :/

I'm going have a talk with my father, and see if he has a pressure cooker with an actual gauge and that won't leak steam like the rust bucket I have on the burner right now.

Are pressure cookers supposed to whistle?  I've never used one before and I have no idea what to expect.

If he doesn't have one, I'll go in the store and buy one myself.

What would happen if I used popcorn as substrate without properly sterilizing it?  Will it sprout?

I would also like to add that no one is allowed to be discouraged/have lessened faith in humanity due to my dumb-fuckery.

This PC is actually my brother's, but he's ironically in jail for marijuana charges right now, so I can't ask him how he uses it.  Or wear the gauge is.

My rocker doesn't rock, it whistles?

By the time it whistles, steam starts coming out from under the lid.

I've had it at the point that a little steam comes out for over 3 hours now, checking about once every half hour and adding more water as needed.

In a bit, I'm going to set it aside to cool down.  I'm going to inoculate the jars after a few hours and see how it turns out.
