I'm getting way to impatient I'm thinking about putting some of my plates to grains a little early.

Awaiting 100% in my monoculture quart for a g2g.  Just wanted to drop in to say hello.

If you got enough growth that you can justify putting it to grain, do it.  The bottom line is that no one but you knows how far along your plate is.  It has always been surprising to me how little is really required to make a grain jar explode with growth.  One single little triangle is enough to feed an entire nation.....Don't rush at our expense.  There is no race, or chronicr would have cheated and won.

My place is suffering winter, and colonization rates are slow...but as I have been researching and proving....cold weather makes for some really dense fruits.  I don't mind waiting extra time watching stuff go SLOWLY.

Oh my goodness tell me about it.. it's brutal! I just shook my first jar.. waiting to G2G that bad boy and things are at a snails pace.  :justkillmenow:

I hate this phase but it's so worth it for that beautiful smell of clean mycelium. Love it.

Fruits that grow this time of year are dense.  I love how small + weight.  Casing stimulates growth, but the cold makes for silly-density.  No hollow stems etc.  Though the fruits are small, they are heavy.  Last year it was about the same.  I prefer it this way....it goes against logic, but I am ok with going against the grain a bit.  Its funny seeing a clone that you know normally makes fruits 8" long, making them only half that but with similar weight.

Honestly I probably only have enough growth to make it worth it on 2 plates and I'm actually really happy with how they look.  The only problem is I have family visiting this weekend.  Although I know one of them could care less it's the non blood relations worry about.  Yeah I'm just pressure cooking some rye with special lids cause well I don't know...:lmafo:

I haven't been on much lately. I unfortunately had a death in the family and had to put everything on hold. But I wanna grow along so I will post some pics of my new setup. I have a few straw logs with some king oysters going right now.

Are those the 2 you found in your house randomly blue? How long have they been going? I'm new to agar and it seems like my clones/spores I put to agar a bit over a week ago have been going pretty slow...and I'm not sure what to transfer.

I need a better camera so I can post some pics of it...might have to just borrow one but a lot of what I'm seeing is just slow or like my pda isnt made the best...just bought a premix so I shoulda just bought the supplies and made it from scratch. It's kinda wet, what does that do to slow things down?

My limited experience is that spores to agar produce some weird looking growths...lots of spores all germinating all at the same place make for a messy look.

You have thousands of genetics, and you can basically pick a small area, and transfer from there.  After 2-5 transfers you will start to see the sectors.  It all depends on how small a piece and how few genetics you pick up from that piece.  Its totally random.

From there you will have options to do a "limited genetic" grow where you put a small spattering of genes from your plate to grain, and grow it out.  It will not be as varied as a true MS grow, and from there you can find a winner and clone it.

You could also grow out your plates and eventually get to isolates.  I have had them in as few as 5 transfers, though I think I got it at 4...irrelevant to the story...  You then have isolated genetics which is ONE set.  Testing is the only option at that juncture.  Put it to grain and hope for the best.

The user "Notahacker420" has a GREAT write up in his signature where he shows how 10 untested isolates perform, and it is really an eye opener.  Not all isolates are guaranteed winners, but in testing that many he was able to find a few that were.

i've been incubating mine, and that has been helping out.  i'll get some shit for this for sure but i put them in a tupperware tub and partially submerged that in my aquarium  it's a planted aquarium so i have to keep the temps in the mid 70's no contamination so far and the growth is better than the ones i didn't put in there.

Thank you whippy once again =)

I see what looks like monokaryotic growth from what I've read, and its see-through mycelium that is kinda strandy and growing out on one part of the plate, could I take a transfer from that or should I wait for the more cotton white growth to expand a little and transfer from there?

Some of my plates have noticeable contams also, probably from the clone/clones I took, I think some of them are clean though, I really need that damn camera so I can get more help from you guys though! D:

For those of you dealing with winter temp issues, I suggest using a tub-in-tub

I use mine year round, keeps my jars right at 78F.

Also, Strom, nice wikidzon I saw back there. You'll love that variety.
