I was wondering if anyone has tried sterilizing and supplementing straw with bran. I have searched and haven't found much on it.

This is from another post here on the shroomery.

" Hi there,
Here at Aloha, we always fruit our oysters on straw with no supplementation because it is the cheaper substrate in this region. No one has ever been able to tell if our oysters were fruited on straw or wood because they are all so delicious, especially the P.o. PL. I would dissuade you from trying to supplement straw as it will most likely be a waste of time and money. Most Pleurotus strains are so vigorous they need no supplementation on most substrates. If you do want to experiment, the procedure you describes above sounds very reasonable. If you have anymore questions please feel free to ask, and good luck!"

Yes adding bran to straw and supplementing will certainly work, to test it properly for your location and growing methods I would suggest doing a trial with various rates of supplementation and having an unsupplemented straw to determine the differences and if the differences are worthwhile when considering the extra expense and the risk of increased contamination rates.

Looks like I miss that one. Thanks

I have never tried this myself, so I do not know if it would make a difference in yield. Do you think there would be a higher rate of contamination?

You could do higher spawn rates to pasteurized straw to supplement as well.

From what I've gathered, the extra time and effort (= money) spent sterilizing supplemented straw is not worth the slight benefits in yield over just pasteurized non-supplemented grows. You might as well invest that extra effort in just doing more unsupplemented straw bags/logs.
I don't have experience in large scale growing myself but if you look at all the growers on here that do this professionally - if it were beneficial overall to supplement and sterilize, they'd be doing it. For the most part, they're not (for oysters on straw - I'm assuming this is mainly geared toward that). Most pasteurize in the most efficient way possible and just process as much volume as they can

Yeah. I was just curious to see if anyone had tried it. I'm sure the difference would be minimal compared to just pasteurizing.

The only species that it makes sense with is King. Many strains perform poorly on supplemented straw. Check out Buckeye Oysters threads on supplemented straw. Its more difficult to work with but he pulls off ridiculous flushes.
Buckeye's supplemented straw
Also chicken or horse poo works well and may be less delicate

i think the real priority is to match mushroom species and specific strain and available substrate to the most cost-effective technique available, so some people will supplement and some not.
you need to test the different options and work out cost:benefit ratios, the best option is the most cost effective one.

I will give it a try with Kings and see how it goes. Straw is everywhere here, and free or next to nothing.
