Agar Agar, Potato Starch & Honey * 1
    #19395563 - 01/09/14 07:39 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Am I losing my mind or did I see a recipe somewhere with these ingredients?  I want to make some plates but have limited ingredients right now.

I have Telephone brand Agar Agar, potato starch, honey, sugar, potato flakes and basic cooking stuff.  Is there anything I can do until I get malt extract?

thanks

Thanks but I'm missing at least two ingredients for each of those recipes.

I think I'm going to try this with 1/4 cup of agar agar powder instead of the ground stick.

eh?

What about the last recipe, substituting honey for the agave nectar?

Current favorite.  Great growth speed and clarity
125ml potato broth
125ml water
3 ml clear agave nectar
5g agar

After comparing Agave to Karo, It certainly seems that there is more to agave nectar than it just being a simple sweeter.  Comparing recipes with 3ml of "Sweeter", the Karo formula produces a thin and wispy look, where the agave nectar produces a fuller and more robust mycelium.  It seems that agave shares some traits with honey.  I am guessing that any recipe that calls for honey can use the agave in same amounts with similar results.

:doublefacepalm:  I see what your saying now.  You need a recipe for potato starch or flakes not broth.

I found these if they might help you
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/3077006/an/0/page/0

Also Potato broth:

250 grams of potatoes to 1 liter of water

Shred the impeded potatoes into a colander, and then rinse them for thirty seconds with cold tap water. Combine the rinsed potatoes with one liter of water, and gently boil for thirty minutes. Filter the resulting potato broth through muslin or cheese cloth and discard the potatoes.

Yeah, I saw that.  What is nutrient agar?

Quote:

Starch Agar (FDA M143)(Nutrient agar with starch)
--------------------------------------------------
23 g Nutrient agar (FDA M112)
10 g Potato starch
1 L Distilled water

Heat to dissolve agar in 500 ml water. Dissolve starch in 250 ml water. Combine and dilute to 1 liter. Autoclave 15 min at 121?C.

Note: add 3 g agar to Difco's dehydrated starch agar. [1]

That's what I have.  Doesn't say anything about "Nutrient agar (FDA M112)"...at least not in English

I don't have dextrose.  I did this one

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/7081785#7081785

but it took way more than 4.5g of powdered agar agar

I imagine that if you find a recipie that outlines PDA with potatoe flakes, one could substitute:

Potato infusion for flakes so long as the recipe calls for 500ml water
Honey @ 7-10ml per 500 ml of water infused with potato flakes.

https://catalog.hardydiagnostics.com/cp_prod/Content/hugo/PotatoFlakeMedia.htm

On that site they use 15g agar to 20g potatoe flakes per liter of deionized water...

1 liter = 1000ml

SO:

if you wanted 250ml fluid divide the entire formula by 4....

Agar: 3.75g
5g potatoe flakes
250ml water

I think that that in itself is probably a great recipe.  If you want to add some sort of complex sugar substance like organic honey, I would reduce the amount of potatoe flake.  Granted its just guesswork:

5g agar
250ml water
3g potatoe flake
3ml Organic honey

Why would I use 5g agar?  This is my limited experience.  I altered a few recipes to get to the place that I am at.  I have never used less than 5g agar per 250ml of "nutrient fluid".

Would 3.75g of agar work with 250ml fluid?  Probably, but I cannot say that I have used that formulation BUT the difference is probably negligible.

I used PDA as a basis for adding and subtracting ingredients.  I refused to order dextrose, and simply couldn't find it locally, so I improvised.

For me "Potato infused water" is simply 1 cup of sliced potato boiled in 250 tap water....(deionized water is not necessary)...after 20-30 min I strain out the potatoes through a simple coffee filter and  screen, and expand the fluid back to 500ml with tap water....At that point I dump out half to get back to 250ml.

Hope that helps a bit.  If it makes questions, feel free to post.  There are so many intelligent and experienced members who also would be willing to add their experiences.

The numbers look good, I've been researching the use of organic honey vs dextrose or malt. What are you using for an agar recipe now almost 9 years later? I'm going with honey all around for my LC liquid and agar hopefully.
