PM cronicr if u did a steam thing with those grains. he may be able to let u kno if thats what his look like or not, and if there is a difference with pc'd jars in appearance.
if my jars look a bit wet out of PC (some moisture on glass, 15 or so scattered wet grains) i will shake and put them aside for a few days, and they look fine after that. dunno if thats all in my head or what tho?

hmm 2 hours not long for steaming grains, maybe u could get away with it for 1/2 pints of wbs if it was soaked, but i'd still up it a lot for qt jars. cronicr does 8 hours i believe

Yea I've read that.. Shoulda but I only have a 2-3hour window to do it. They were soaking in a bucket for 20-22hours then rinsed again . Water came to a boil. Turned the heat OFF. Then poured it in put lid on and stird every 3mins for around 10-15 min. Took out. Drained. Put out to dry in my growing closet for around 35-45 min then put into jars.. But the paper towels I had under neath the wbs when drying was pretty damn damp lol. I prolly should put more paper towels and let dry again but too late.

I am a newb myself but I have read alot about steam sterilizing grains doesn't generally work because they host contaminants that are stronger than ones generally in your brf/verm sub and they will not be killed off by just steam sterilization for a couple hours and you really need a PC to sterilize grains in a reasonable amount of time. Someone correct me if im way off though

You can steam sterilize with brf & verm for the pf tek, but with grains you should definetly PC, and I believe even more so with wbs.
I haven't looked into it myself, but I've seen people on here talk about using brf for bulk type grows on here, I would say look into that until you get a PC. I think how it works is you take some cakes, break them up with a cheese grater, and mix them with a substrate . I don't know really, I've just seen this stuff while skimming.
Kind of an old thread but I did a quick search and found this. Maybe it will help?

There is a huge difference between PF tek cakes and grain jars. Id expect contamination by day 3.

When you do your grains again, what I do it soak for about 24h, bring to a boil, turn off the heat, strain them & leave in strainer for 60-90 minutes while they continue to cool down and "steam dry".
You need to leave the lid off whatever you have them in while you stir, so the hot steam can evaporate off the grains BEFORE you PC them. This will bring your grains to be perfect..if they seem a little too wet do a toilet paper test, put a spoonful of your wbs on a square of tp for 10 seconds and if it is wet at all, keep drying!
If your grains still aren't dry enough take out a hair dryer and finish them off! Better to dry than wet when it comes to grains, all the moisture your myc needs is inside the grain!

You can leave them in the pot ifu want, just keep the lid off so the steam can get out, and stir every 10-15 mins for 90 mins. Usually the bottom half of grains is still kinda damp for me so I'll load half into jars and then blow dry the rest til its perfect, and load that into the rest of my jars

a collander to drain off the water and then stir occasionally a few times while in the collander then wait and hour or two until they are cooled off

I'm not an old hand at this and this is not advice, just what I have experienced. I've been doing a lot of experimenting lately and have had results as follows:
Grains Tested: WBS, Popcorn & Green Lentils; Steam sterilized: WBS & Popcorn, same method - Soaked in tap water for 10-12hrs. Strained and rinsed 4-6 times, rapid boil for 10-15min (stirring frequently), immediately scoop 'boiling hot' grains into jars using slotted spoon, cap jar and immediately place in boiling water (steam) for 1.5hrs. *Various inoculations with: MS Solution, LC & Spores scraped from print. All went well colonization was 12-15days, spawned roughly 1:2 to 9:1 HPoo/Hay 48hrs ago, already seeing myc surface in spots.
Thoughts: #1 - Soaking for 10-12hrs is a safe-ish medium, allowing as much time as possible for endospores to hydrate/germinate yet not long enough to allow popcorn to ferment or WBS to germinate/sprout. (I start the initial soak with very hot tap water to speed up hydration and discourage germination of WBS.) #2 - Transfering 'boiling hot' grains to the hot jar, directly into the boiling water for sterilizing, keeps the grain at high temps consistantly longer, killing off more (hopefully germinated) contam spores. I shake the jars very briefly 2-3 times during sterilization.
#3 - Hydration hasn't been an issue as of yet. Scooping/straining with a slotted spoon adds a little liquid to the mix (aprx 1/8 inch on bottom of jar) ;however it seems to be absorbed as the steam-sterilization heats and swells the grain a little more.
Now the Green Lentils are very interesting. Short 2hr soak, strained/dried very well, mixed 3:1 w/ Peat Moss, Steam-Sterilized 2hrs, 'noc'ed w/spores scraped from print. 95% colonized in 12-14 days. Spawned to 9:1 HPoo/Hay 48hrs ago, looking pretty good thus far, considering.
Thoughts: #1 - Lentils turn to stringy slime if the skin breaks before covered w/myc. #2 - Peat moss (to add fluff) is dark, hard to see if contams have set in. #3 - Fun experiment, looks like I may get fruit but won't be using lentils or peat again.
Thanks!
