Supplements Necessary??

Hey guys, just wondering what everyone's thoughts on vitamin supplements are? I feel I have quite a balanced life style with a pretty descent diet (not perfect, but who wants perfection right?). I'm all about being the best version of myself so how necessary are vitamins in helping achieve this? I don't have a lot of money being a student however I'm definately considering fish oil supplements or just a straight up multi vitamin. Thoughts?? thanks

supplements are not necessary unless you are looking to push your body to its limits. If you are looking to be fit and healthy it can be done without supplements. If you are looking to get to and maintain a 4-5% body fat ratio or massively bulk up you may want to look into supplements. Unless you are looking to work out for hours on end everyday to have an unusually fit body then anything more than a multi-vitamin is unnecessary, It may help you to achieve your goal faster but with hard work and perseverance you should not need supplements it will just take a little longer. Adjust your diet for what you want to achieve and you can make it a reality with a steady scheduled diet and exercise routine.

Yeah it depends on what you're going for. I would suggest fish oil if you don't get enough fish and it's good for your skin/joints. Otherwise if you're just thinking of taking supplements for no real reason I would say don't. Consider investing more energy and money into healthy foods and eating enough, spending time cooking and preparing meals for yourself. You'll be healthier and save time and money this way.

Getting your brain working the best it can is a combination of eating plenty of healthy foods throughout the day, sleeping enough, getting outside, meditating, exercise, loving and being positive and happy. I guarantee you'll get more out of being healthy than you will from stimulants and nootropic drugs

That's very true. I do believe that humans have the ability to manifest extreme health with the mind and feeling positive etc. However at times it is easier said than done. I also believe that science can show us what we can put into our bodies and what to expect from observing experiments etc. In the case of supplements, a cheap, and according to science an effective way of increasing cognitive function etc. could be fish oil.
Either way, the two sides of the coin intrigue me very much and I will try and find the balance between the things i ingest and the state of mind i'm in.

It's definitely not worth it unless you're experiencing problems because you have a deficiency in something. If you have a balanced diet you shouldn't though.

So in terms of reaching certain RDI's how important is that? What if one day my diet doesn't have enough of x mineral but the next day I jst so happen to have enough x mineral and not enough y mineral etc.. does it really matter? My instinct tells me that it doesn't matter too much just stick to nice healthy foods but don't over eat to meet certain %'s

Obviously shoot for RDI but you'll be "okay" if you don't get everything every day. Just vary your protein sources, complex/simple carbs, healthy fats, and get plenty of veggies and fruit each day
