It's called sampling and people go to college to learn how to do it properly.

It's called statistics. You clearly have absolutely no understanding of them. Please have a look at statistical significance.

This is a quote directly out of the PDF I posted.
Quote:
Smoking prevalence is twice as high for the lowest family income category as for the highest (37% vs. 20% for men and 30% vs. 16% for women)
I also posted this quote in my earlier post but you very clearly did not read it.

I am not making any claims so I feel I have nothing to prove. I have challenged peoples claims and no one has any sufficient evidence. Even the study does not say smoking is mostly in the lower class, just that there is a difference in percentage.

That's how you know if a motherfucker is stupid. If they stink and don't intend to do anything about it, they're an idiot.
I once sat behind a black girl on the bus who had dreads and somehow the stench of her hair made it's way to my nostrils and the way it smelled was just downright fucking awful. I was thinking "Oh my god, how can somebody be comfortable with themselves smelling this way. Jesus christ"

I know of statistics and while it is a good study, it does not prove anything. It deals with probabilities of what might or might not happen. It makes predictions. It does not prove any real hypothesis.

That seems like a claim to me, I'm happy if it is not though. But again, you are saying that someone else is posting lies (or skewing a representation). That warrants some level of proof.

You're right. Sampled studies are completely worthless. We as a people should disregard all information we have ever obtained through the use of sampling. It's not like the field has been heavily researched for decades or anything. /s

It is so funny when people have nothing better to argue so they start putting words in peoples mouth. Where did I ever say we should disregard all info that we ever got from sampling? I admit it does have some merits in society, but nonetheless it cannot "prove" anything and is no replacement for what actually happens in the real world.
And regardless the statistics shown do not show that smoking is mostly for people that are under the poverty line. Yes there is more, but there is still a shitload of people above the poverty line that smoke, so it is really a baseless argument

10% is a massive difference. Between 20% and 30% it is 1.5 times higher! The study I posted also said 16% vs 30%, which is a 14% difference. According to all of the studies posted (and MANY more) that is a statistically significant number, which means that although it is technically an estimate, it has an EXTREMELY high probability of being correct. That is how properly executed statistical sampling works. It is not intended to be a "replacement for what happens in the real world" - it is a statistical model of the real world.
I never claimed that smoking is "mostly for people that are under the poverty line" (what does mostly even constitute?). I said the probability that someone in a lower income bracket smokes is SIGNIFICANTLY (yes, 14% IS significant) higher than those in higher income brackets.

Alright, listen guys
Poor people smoke more than people with money.
Uneducated people smoke more than educated people
Of course, when you're ueducated, you are more than likely poor.
Because it isn't enough to be poor, you need an expensive addiction too.

Dude, you jumped into the middle a debate I was having with someone else who said that smoking is mainly for poor people. I was not even addressing any claims you made. Good job on arguing something that was totally pointless though
From the article:
Quote:
Smoking prevalence generally decreased with increasing education and was higher among adults living below the poverty level (28.9%) than among those at or above the poverty level (18.3%)
That is in the "results" section of the article.
That equates to approximately 3 out of 10 for poor people, and 2 out of 10 for rich people. Are you seriously trying to imply that that is huge difference? LMFAO
That IS NOT a significant difference and if you cannot see that then you are definitely impaired

But out of ten people, its just one more person. One isn't a lot of people man.
Just once I'd like to see someone in here say "Hey wow, your well reasoned argument and facts really opened my eyes, I'm going to stop needlessly arguing now." Some day.

You think 50% higher rate isn't significant? Would you feel the same if someone told you had a 50% better chance of getting cancer than everyone else?
When it comes to human behavior statistics, 50% is fucking HUGE.
