Bulk harvest questions
    #19393286 - 01/09/14 11:32 AM (10 years, 21 days ago)

This bulk attempt was based upon Strom's start to finish bulk tek. Except rather than using the 66qt tub, I believe a 106qt tub was used, perhaps by mistake.

The spawn was inoculated with a multispore syringe, 1 of 4 previously purchase. Other spores of the same origin have yielded very uneven pinning and lots of mutations from past use on BRF cakes.

Due to the oversized tub, the substrate is most likely not 3.5-4 inches deep. What would the most likely symptoms of that be?

In terms of the very uneven pinning, is that related to original spores and their genetics, or rather an environmental condition?

Full shot. Most of the larger ones had torn veils in the morning, and were removed that night.

Lots of growth on the sides.

Obviously the photographer sucks, but this one looks super "clean"

Last but not least, the spotted cap grew from the side of the tub. It has been noticed that some other caps growing from the sides also have similar spot patterns. Is that anything to be concerned about?

Thank you all!!:mushroom2::mushroom2:

When using multi spores your pin set and growth rate will always be some what inconsistent.

:drunkdriver: Nice Pictures!

Multispore can yield uneven results yes.  I wonder if such a large tub is holding humidity with such a smaller substrate to volume ratio.

Can we see a picture from the outside of the tub?  Like the whole thing?

The humidity is definitely the biggest struggle. I'll see if more pictures can be posted.

About 85% humidity

Are there any suggestions for improving this current setup?
For harvesting, should these be cut individually as the veil tears or.. what?
What would be the suggested way to proceed? There are 21 more qt jars incubating from the same MS. So those will probably go into three 66qt tubs.
After that...
Could some prints be made from a healthier fruit, and then inoculated into a LC?

Okay first things first. I understand your hesitancy to upload images directly to shroomery but it will really help everyone view your images who is too lazy to right click on them and select 'view image'

That being said. PLEASE make sure your next jars go into 66 or 50 qt tubs.  You're getting most of your pinning around the sides of the substrate which tells me that the holes are not bringing in fresh air to the middle enough so the pins are mostly forming at the edges where humidity is highest.

The holes look too high above the substrate for the size of the tub. In general you want the bottom holes to be right at to 1 centimeter above the level of the substrate.  Also, the holes themselves look a little small for the size of the tub.  Are they only one inch?  I would bump it up to 2 if you can. If you don't have a hole saw a hot knife is probably best for making the holes bigger without disturbing the substrate but make sure you have at least a bandana over your nose and mouth because it creates a shit load of burnt plastic fumes.

At this point definitely just cut the shrooms as the veils tear. I would also print them as sterile as you can.  From there you can make a syringe or I guess you could do a liquid culture but really at this point you should be doing agar work. You can buy Malt Extract Agar powder from Outgrow and adapt it to Pastywhite's agar tek.  It's great for home projects for people who don't want to buy petri's.

I would definitely just stick with prints and agar work over LC.  The easiest way to do LC without contamination is to have a clean spore syringe from a sponsor here on the site as your inoculate. If you make your own syringe and don't have a flowhood or really good SAB skills you might just be spending time making a contaminated LC.  But hey it's your choice. I totally understand the desire for lc.

So yeah, Bigger holes. 2 inches around. I would extend them downward closer to the substrate if that makes sense.  So the top of the holes now will end up being the top of 2 inch holes.

How is your polyfill stuffed?  Loose on top?

Do you have a fan running in the room? Sorry if I'm asking questions you already answered.

Any other info you want to add?

I didn't know about uploading pictures straight to the forum, I will definitely do that from now on, because they are atrocious.

All future tubs will be in 66qt, 106 or whatever it is was an oversight. :\

A styrofoam cutter was used to cut the plastic. The holes were cut according to the heights in the tek, but obviously since a larger tub was mistakenly used, they ended up too high.

The hole will be enlarged. One more on each long side could be added?

There are no objections to agar over LC, just looking for opinions.

There is a fan in the room. Not directly pointed at the tub, but close. The polyfill is stuffed according to Frank's monotub tek. Maybe not as perfectly.

Liner will be trimmed.

If you have access to a dremel, it makes short work of enlarging holes.  I use one of the cylinder sanding bits and it cuts through the plastic very fast leaving a good clean edge.

That's a good idea. There are definitely a few dremels around.

Holes are enlarged. Liner is trimmed.

Just an update...

I have agar now.

Also... I've never seen anything about rehydrating the bulk substrate? Is that something that needs to be done?

I like to give it a heavy mist after it has flushed.
You could give it 5 days or so rest period after the flush and then mist.
Sometimes it doesn't wanna wait though, then it's just heavy mist then fan.

I do the same. I haven't tried dunking my bulk subs. I just mist the hell out of the substrate after giving it a few days to reconsolidate / rest and repair any damage I may have inadvertently caused by harvesting.

Second flush always seems about the same as the first.
