Pasteurisation tips
    #19392771 - 01/09/14 09:15 AM (10 years, 22 days ago)

1.When pasteurizing a substrate or casing layer I seem to find it hard to get the temp right.  I do it in jars but it seems the top is cooler than the bottom.  By the time I get an even temp its usually to high.  Am I worrying too much or are there some tips out there for success.

2.  I want to bulk up my Thai strain by making a substrate of coir/verm to use for a bubble wrap tek.  I have 1 jar to use as spawn. If I make 2 jars of sub will that be ok? Any advice?

3.  I have also been told to try a multi compost casing tek.  Again any tips?

i only use baggs(foodsaver) not jars..i also use the bucket tek for my pasteurizing,
well a cooler because it holds temps much longer.

I bring water to a boil in a pot on the stovetop,
turn off the heat an let it cool to 180*F and dump into cooler..
3.5 hours later the water temp is still hangging around 145*F,thou you only need a solid hour at temp(160*F-ish) to get the job done,
its pretty much set and forget for me

im sure splitting your sub to an extra jar wont hurt anything..i also dont case so..no tips on that one. GL

If you only have one jar of spawn, dont chance losing it to tge bucket tek. A 1:2 ratio is fine, but properly pasteurize that sub.

bucket tek is not true pastuerization... very chancy.

1 to 2 is a great ratio... your mushies will go mad, quickly. feel free to add another. (1:3 is also excellent) Waste not your spawn.

with the jars, it takes a bit of a fiddle to balance the temp so not to overcook your sub... but if you can get it right for an hour just turn the heat off (let cool overnight) and it finishes the job for you. it's a bit of a see in the future 2 minutes, to balance... you'll get it.

Follow Franks proper pasteurization exactly and I'm sure you'll have success

I use gallon size ziplock brand freezer bags.  I bring a brick of coir and 2 qts of verm and a handful of gypsum  to field compacity (about 5 qts of water) then split it between 3 bags. I put the bags down in a large pot (my pc) and add hot tap water until the bags want to start floating. I then put a meat thermometer down in the center of one of the bags and turn the heat to medium. I leave it on medium until the meat thermometer temp rises about 5 to 8 degrees. This takes almost exactly an hour for me each time. Then turn the heat off and stick the lid on the pc. It will take about 40 min but the heat will climb to 140. This is when you wanna start you're 90 min timer. After the 90 min my temp is usually about 155. Works perfectly for me every time

If its not pasteurised properly does that make contams easier to raise their ugly heads?

if not properly pasteurized  you could go over the temperature,
Partially sterilizing the substrate allowing easier access for molds since we spawn in open air

1:2 ratio is fine but i did a 1:3 ratio with mine

i followed rr tek for no meat thermometer using jars and also before i knew of franks

Sort of. It's just bad technique and bad habits. I've sterilized coir before and it works just fine. Coir is forgiving and you can cut corners with it but for how easy proper pasteurization is it's really not worth the increased chances of failure. You can't get away with sterilizing your substrate if you add anything to it other than coir and verm so it's best to do it right from the start.

I use a cooler with great success.  It is not a bucket.  It is very easy to pasteurize this way because like Josh.0 stated, it holds temps for a very long time.  I have had success with straw using this method, and will continue to use my cooler.

If you are working with coir, verm, and gypsum there seems to be no problems with total sterilization.  Other materials require attention to detail, time and temps.  I would not attempt to unevenly heat straw in bottles.  140-160f, not more in some places, and not less in others.  I start my water at about 160 and after 2 hours temps are still above 140.  Large amounts of hot water + the insulating factor of the cooler make for even heat and retention of heat.

RR's straw prep.

Quote:

Place one Sterlite or Rubbermaid container inside another for the insulation properties the dead air space between them provides. A very large insulated ice chest would also work well for this.
