For those of you looking to go further than cakes. $17.99 PC
    #1935164 - 09/20/03 10:06 AM (20 years, 6 months ago)

Casing cakes is an introduction to casing. It is not ideal. If you think you are able to do a casing successfully, wich is not hard, then please, try grains.

The one thing about grains, that will be diffrent is..You NEED a pressure cooker.  The reason i'm writing this is because @ walmart the other day I saw a 4.2qt cooker for only $17.99 USD. This is pretty cheap people, and a very smart investment.

While there you can pick up a bag of popcorn for $0.77 or a bag of birdseed for a couple dollars. This is also pretty cheap.

For a casing layer, its hard to go wrong with cococoir and vermiculite. These can both be found at walmart, or a pet store usually...if you are moving up from cakes, im sure you already have more than enough vermiculite.

This isnt a tek, and im not getting into specifics, but just recommending that those of you who feel you want to do bigger and better things with your project, do it. The price has dropped, and for $20 more you will have a peice of equipment that will pay itself off in less than one use

Like I said, this is for those people who want to case only. You cannot birth a grain jar like you would a pf style cake, but if you are sterile, you can have some award winning results.

Working with grain is so much cleaner, and easier, and funner. You can shake them, they colonize fast, are high in nutrician.

You can also do grain to grain transferes, wich makes innoculating new jars as simple as possible without needing a new syringe...this also eliminates waiting for spores to germinize, the mycelium starts growth almost immediately.

Think about it, and dont be afraid to try new things, just some suggestions!

That's not the one he's referring to, but it's 6qts and still pretty cheap.

I'm having some trouble finding jars.  Target doesn't have widemouth jars.

Thanks for the info.

Walmart doesnt sell jars either anymore, i think because of thier use in home meth productiono or something...lol. Most grocery stores will carry jars though, and if you use grains, you dont need widemouth.

But make sure your jars that you plan to use fit in your pc before buying it. I was going to buy this PC until I realized that quart jars wouldn't fit into it. They were out of the larger pcs so I was out of luck.

Man...

I had trouble finding those wide-mouth jars at first too. It's cool though, see Safeway has a secret. They KNOW what we use them for. That's why the HIDE them. They HIDE them from us. I was looking for them at Safeway like... two days ago. I asked this black lady where I could find them and she shrugged her shoulders and went over to talk to some other Safeway official. They directed me all around the store. I found NOTHING. I was all pissed off and I was about to leave with the *more expensive* narrow mouth jelly jars when I looked up. There they were, Kerr wide-mouths, 1/2 pint jars... on SALE! Those Safeway bastards HIDE THEM FROM YOU! Don't listen to them, Safeway has EVERYTHING, you just need to look for yourself, more often than not. Just look above those huge freezer things, where they keep all the Otter Pops and those yummy Flintstones things, you'll find what you're looking for.

If the check-out guy gives you shit about your mother canning jelly, punch him in the face and tell him Barcode sent you.

'Shroom on.
