School... Undergrad/Grad advice!
    #19389237 - 01/08/14 04:54 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Hey, so I graduated my BS in Psych. Im now signed up for classes for my Masters in teaching special ed. But idk.... Im not really feeling like it is worth the investment of time and money with respect to return. ANd the classes are online so its not like im getting a great hands on education.

QUestions:
BA/BS
If I was to get another Bachelor degree, what should I go for? My friend graduated with philosophy and is spending another 2 years to get his Bachelor in Computer science. Idk if thats right for me, but what is?

GRAD:
I have been considering getting my MSW (masters social work) or maybe going the counseling route. What else is out there that ties into psychology?
Anything like neuropsychology that is bio related and has good job outlook? Anything that integrates psychopharmacology without having to go tooo heavy on the medical side.

Any advice is welcome here!!!

I know a girl who got her undergrad in psych and a mastesr in counseling.  while she was in her masters program, she took extra courses towards her BCBA certification (board certified behavioral analyst).  now she can do in-home behavioral counseling for kids with autism,  and bill insurance directly.  huge pay lag because its dealing with insurers/government, but the pay is <$100/billable hr.  even without billing directly, she could easily work at any number of private practices and have a client list waiting for her and less nuanced business work (setting up the LLC, insurance, taxes, etc).  definitely not a field that's going anywhere

Thats what my work experience is in!!! I find working with kids with Autism really interesting. If i stick with this grad program i will enter the autism program but its not ABA. Its for special ed teaching, autism endorsement.

Ive been thinking about ABA, and I like the idea of it. It is pretty heavy stuff though. At the school I worked at the BA's were called in during the crisis situations and they would get called alot! Youd hear it over the intercom. So essentially they were working with the most difficult kids/situations all the time. But still, it is very interesting and applies more psychology which is what i am more interested in.
I hope she enjoys it and applies it in a way that she is able to help people and love what she does. THanks!

no problem.

yeah the BAs get put to use, and the workload to get the certification is HEAVY, and the test is HARD (the girl I know failed the first try, and she has a photographic memory - or claimed to [lol])

that being said -- pays bank, and is very rewarding.
