The government is the master the citizen slave

President Kennedy said, "Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country."... Neither half of that statement expresses a relation between the citizen and his government that is worthy of the ideals of free men in a free society. "What your country can do for you" implies that the government is the patron, the citizen the ward. "What you can do for your country" assumes that the government is the master, the citizen the servant.

the government is the purest expression of the aggregate.
individuals, elected from the aggregate by the aggregate, directing the aggregate machine and manipulating it to their individual wants - which is, in effect, exactly what the aggregate is doing on the macro scale.
degeneracy abound

I have always found it horrifying that that line is held as sacred text. It is 100% wrong.

It is a pretty shitty perspective to have on government (from either angle), and it seems like the majority view it that way.

spoken during the cold war, during vietnam -- hoping to drive unity in a country that was up against strictly disciplined foes on every side. vietnamese who'd blow themselves up. russians with their seemingly militarized citizenry.

It was before Vietnam.

apologies. i was born in the mid-80s. i had to google the years of vietnam. i knew it ended in the 70s, but wikipedia had an extended timeline. i did a very surface-level scan.
i understand the purpose of a government. i also understand that governments came into existence because without them the strongest arm rules the land. power in numbers is the name of the governmental game. I don't see how voluntarily "serving the country" (in whatever direct, obscure or abstract way an acting individual would want to interpret that) can cause any harm on the individual or aggregate scale. after all - voluntary actions are voluntary. as long as the giver and receiver aren't against it - then I have no problem.
So by all means, ask not what your country can do for you. After all - asking a question does not obligate one to action.

gee sorry I wasn't born in 1776 to prevent all this tyranny...
Its not our fault, do you wanna die young fighting a war you can't win?
The only thing keeping us semi-unfucked with is our neighborhood gun owners and underground "gangsters"
so you agree its YOUR fault to? YOU go do something about it
