How to securely save notes on your Android phone
    #19389619 - 01/08/14 05:45 PM (10 years, 22 days ago)

Hi boys (and girls)

I was hoping someone might be able to help me out with this one. From time to time, I need to store sensitive information on my phone like username and passwords that are not easy to remember. At the moment, I use a simple program called ColorNote that enables to to add quick entries and add a password to this too. My worry is I'm not entirely sure how secure this program really is in the event that I was to lose my phone and someone attempted to gain access.

Can anyone recommend another suggestion for an app that I could use in its place? I use TextSecure for text messages which provides encryption for any issues like the one mentioned above. Is there anything similar for note taking? Ideally, I'm looking for something that I can save locally rather than somewhere online like Evernote or whatever else.

Anyway your input would be much appreciated.

Make sure to log ALL your illegal activity so that it is easy to prosecute you when your phone and key is seized.

You can use a PGP application to encrypt your text for when you send it. But if you want to store notes safely, I recommend using an application that stores them by encrypting them, and using a program like SSE to encrypt the text.

But I really don't recommend you store this kind of stuff on an Android.

And where is your key stored?

Storing the encrypted data and key together doesn't work out to be a secure system.

I'm all for GnuPGP but like Mr.Anonymous has gladly pointed out, I don't intend on sending any encrypted messages. All I'm really looking for is a particular app that is good for saving personal notes whenever necessary.

As it stands ColorNote which I'm currently using might be useful but if I was ever to lose my phone, I can't imagine it would be too hard to gain access to any information held within these notes. Even if a masterkey is used to prevent anyone from gaining access.

Is there not a single app that encrypts messages locally?

GPG is not just for sending encrypted messages, it also works well to encrypt local files.  You can use gpg -c to do conventional encryption rather than public key encryption.    If you do this, remember that the security of the encryption is largely determined by the length of the key.
