Advice--Ethnogens as a tool for self discovery
    #19388894 - 01/08/14 04:00 PM (10 years, 22 days ago)

A little background.  I have had one hell of a past 10 years!  About 10 years back, my life hit a real crisis point.  I was an aspiring hardcore alcoholic.  My father unexpectedly passed away and I fell into such a depression I took up drinking as a 24/7 occupation.  I dropped out a PhD about 6 months before finishing, and life just fell into chaos.

I haven't touched a drop in nearly 8 years, and use marijuana infrequently (maybe 3-4 times a year).  While I did plenty of drugs in my youth, I haven't done them in a long time.

Still, I suffer from dreadful depression.  On top of that I'm once again 6 months from a PhD (about halfway done writing my dissertation) and the stress levels in my research are off the charts.  That, and I'm approaching 40 and just don't have the energy for the long days and 7 day weeks.

In any case, I've remained interested in "alternative" treatments for depression and am an enormous fan of Alexander Shulgin (I am studying to be a PhD chemist, after all!).  So several months back I got the idea to try growing mushrooms (I've long since lost touch with anyone I could buy them from) and was thinking I could use them in very small, barely noticable doses to try and explore what the root cause of my unhappiness is.

I would say that with age, my patience has certainly increased.  I think if you ask any of my peers they would tell you I'm basically a good and hardworking man.  A little moody maybe, generally burned out and anxious.  But not a bad guy.  Not an angry guy.  Just a regular guy who's been through some soaring highs and crushing lows.

It's been a good 15 years since I've used anything "harder" than pot.  And honestly I've never given it an HONEST attempt as a tool for exploration.  In my youth, sadly, it was an excuse to get loaded and go to the Widespread Panic show, or whatever was going on at the time.

When you guys are using ethnogens as an honest tool of self exploration, what kinds of activities (if any) do you like to engage in?  I'm of the belief that given the right circumstances these compounds can allow you to access realms you might never reach otherwise. (I'm guessing many/most of you folks belive the same)  Now that I'm growing older and wiser, I just don't want it to turn into me getting stoned and playing Madden all day!  I have some actual issues and stresses that I am trying to sort through.

Thanks for any thoughts, advice, wisdom.  I'm not sure in my current state of mind I would venture to try more than a bare minimum dose.  Just in case things aren't going well.  I'm not afraid, but I have a very healthy respect for the medicine and what it can do if you aren't careful.

Hey man,

Nice to see an oldie (or at least not a teenager) trying to find the love of psychs.

I'd honestly just go for a walk into the nicest park/outdoors area you have. No Madden

Nature is all you need. You'll realize how crazy our world really is. That always inspires me.

John;

your earnest quest is too vague for the pundits here to provide fair guidance.

small mushroom doses wont hurt, and may help you to orbit your issues with a light heart.

more serious tripping may or may not help -
40 is not old (me 62)

best of luck with dissertation, and hopefully a great post, maybe with tenure.

Hello John...welcome to the Shroomery.

I can't recommend using marijuana in your situation, but perhaps some psychedelic experience would help you find the will and patience you need to complete your degree.  It's hard to say.  You seem like a mature and rational person who knows himself well, so I imagine you'll do what's best if you give yourself the space to make a good decision.

Wish you the best.. :nyan:

I find solo experiences to be the most theraputic, and my favorite way to spend low to moderate dose trips is by going out for leisurely hikes. These hikes are filled with periods of quiet contemplation, yoga and meditation sessions, and soaking in the beauty of the world.

I recommend building a relationship with the mushroom by starting out with small doses, and slowly increasing the dose untill you reach your comfort level. This way you gain an appreciation for the more subtle effects, and you get to know the nuances of the mushroom experience intimately. That is how I got started on this path many years ago, and that is how I intoduced my wife (who has never even smoked pot) to the world of psychedelia.

Welcome to the Shroomery

I think you can gain some insight into yourself but need to be ready... Not everyone wants to see or feel themselves with the veneer of ego and self delusion ripped away...

But if you feel ready... Find your own set and setting that suits you...

Would suggest a sitter... Someone to help if needed...

Good luck and good vibes

Peace

Another old fart here - Honestly, I would recommend meditation, mindfulness practice, maybe even some tai chi and/or yoga.

Nothing is something worth doing. We distract ourselves from our selves by "doing" things. Be mindful and don't be afraid of the dark corners in your mind. At the end if the day, you have to go through your issues to transmute them.

thanks for all the input.

I was thinking a lot about this today, and I think my fundemental issue I need to address is my inability to find balance.  I've never been able to do anything in moderation.  Back in my old drinking days, it was insane (suicidal sometimes) quanities of booze.  I gave up drinking nearly 8 years ago, but put the same insane drive towards work/school instead.  It dawned on me today that my default setting seems to be "self destruct".  I set these impossibly high goals for myself, then when I fail I feel terrible.  It's a cycle of setting myself up for crushing failure.

In my advancing years, it's FINALLY dawning on me that it doesn't need to be this way.  And the only person who can do anything about it is me.  I need to learn to slow down. To "smell the flowers".  The problem is, I don't know how.

I guess that is specifically what I am hoping to explore.  How to be a little more Zen about things.  Not so freaked out about the future, or beating the shit out of myself over past sins.  To accept that whatever sins I've committed, I've paid dearly for.

Psychs are not a magic key to lifes problem. They can give you a different perspective on things but as to if that perspective is of good or bad use is really a gamble.

Tread lightly with psychs and take whatever you do see or learn with a grain of salt. There can be some lessons and things realized on drugs but a lot of it is just pretty colors, weird thoughts and general batshittery.

Theres some good advice from the oldies on this forum. Ive been tripping 16 years now. My best advice is treat drugs like a spice not a main course in the feast of life!

I highly recommend you attend some holotropic breathing sessions. It involves some talking/group work, coaching, breathing session, post therapy and group sharing. It has helped people with many problems. Stanislav Grof came up with it mainly. His wife is an ex alcoholic. Grof has taken psychedelics before and is a trained psychologist. Many people have been trained in his method since. It works for many psychological issues and helps people simply seeking or wondering what life is all about.

Take a walk outside in the woods and eat what seems appealing.. if it is bitter.. eat very little as not to die..

And thus begins the  reverse-fusing of our one-dimentional understanding, and adds ever-expanding perspectives, in depth and number; splitting our perception, and in so doing, seemingly irrationally, creates yet more one-ness, with all that ever was, is and will ever be, streching across the infinite, inunderstood concept of everything, percievable and not.

You've got it!  Don't miss the forest for the trees.
Psychedelics to me are honestly like a brain vacation.  From how your talking, they sound perfect for what you'll use them for.
Fear is your main obstacle in these ventures, when in doubt remember to turn off your mind and float downstream. Meditation and breathing really really help with this.  Remember to always have respect for the psilocybin, it can be a very humbling, amazing, and downright bizarre little chemical.
