Need feedback on makeshift Incubation Chamber
    #19388630 - 01/08/14 03:10 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Unfortunately my living situation doesn't allow me to have SGFC.
So here's what i have done.
I keep this in a hidden closet, with a temperature of 80 F.
I can only quickly fan it (2 min) once a day.

Will this work?
Is this too much of a perlite base for this palenque cubensis cake?

the pic shows me having just fanned it.  Then i close it and put back in the closet.
Got a 6500 K light in the closet.

Cut some slits at the bottom of the cake and some at the top of the bag. It needs passive FAE to fruit. There might be some other suggestions too.

Magik,

the bag has a small filter patch in the middle.
think that's enough?

nope, it needs constant FAE which fanning cant provide

:whathesaid: Constant FAE, and evaporation off the substrate is the key to fruits. Filter patch is for GE.

FAE in a bag that small is like fanning 10 times an hour. You have to keep the PPM of CO2 less than 1000. In a SGFC that's like 3-5 FAE per hour or there about. If you have one cake in fruiting chamber the size of a room you would obviously need less than one FAE an hour and in a very small bag with a substrate that's nearly have the volume of the bag you're going to need a lot more. You also have to try to keep the RH at or above 90/95%. If you can only fan them for 2 minutes once a day you should re-evaluate the need to grow cubes just to get high.

all of the cubensis grow kits (with the mycelium already spawned) use a similar grow bag with a patch.

question: if I add small holes to the bag, that will increase the FAE but won't that decrease the humidity which is key for fruiting?

as you get air moving it causes evaporation off your sub and creates it's own humidity on the surface of your cake, i'd poke some holes in a soda bottle before using that

great explanation!  brilliant cronic.
will add use a hole puncher and add several holes to the fruiting bag.

already got one of the cakes pinning in only 3 days

Cubensis is a very resilient species. It's going to make mushrooms in the bag but the yield is going to be horrible the stems are going to be long and thing most likely and the caps will probably be small. That's the way of the kit. Just get some results enough that people still come and spend money on things that cost half as much to make yourself and with better quality too.

bodhi,
curious to know why the bags will yield long stem mushrooms vs. short-stem in a SGFC?

When did you say you had a SGFC? If you cut the bag to the substrate level and put it in a SGFC you'll be fine, If you're leaving it in the bag though you're not getting good fruiting conditions and those are the results typical of most in-vitro filter patch bags that are that size that are premade and even hand made.

I started out with bags like that when I was a noob, bad idea, I suggest no one starts with them.

He didint he wanted to know the diff. And if ur only fanning 2 mins a day in that shit kit then ur goin to get skinny shrooms and maybe only 1 or 2 a sgfc give good FAE and humidity therefore producing a better yield and healthy shrooms put some holes in bottom and top of ur bag to provide some FAE and good luck do it your self next time if u can!

You will get long stems because the mushroom is not getting enough air. It is stretching out to find the fresh air. Picture a mushroom outside maybe it is in grass, maybe its under leaves, either way there is not a lot of fresh air. And the mushroom needs fresh air to disperse it's spores so it stretches out to get to the open where there is plenty of air to go around. This is why your mushrooms will get long skinny stems, they are looking to get to fresher air.

You can make a small fruiting chamber by putting holes in a 2 liter soda bottle and cutting it in half and putting a few inches of perlite, but in my experience there is not a lot of room for mushroom development.

What I would try with your set up is cutting small holes into the bag, follow the concept of a SGFC. And dump your perlite in the bottom of the bag. Doing that should give you better results than your current configuration.

Thank you brother, really interesting response.  Hadn't thought of that.
