~95% Colonized BRF Cakes Not Pinning
    #19388615 - 01/08/14 03:08 PM (10 years, 22 days ago)

I have four half-pint BRF cakes currently sitting in a humidified storage tub that I fan everyday with a 10 hour light cycle. My fruiting method and diligence had worked ferociously last time I made BRF cakes, so I doubt that is the problem. The tops of the cakes (which were the bottoms in vitro) are slowly colonizing still. I had to remove them from the jars because they would not colonize. I presume the dilemma is because I set the jars on naught but a dishrag when I steam sterilized in a pot of boiling water, so the BRF mixture must have hardened preventing easy colonization within the jars. Fuzzy mycelium is now slowing devouring these uncolonized top sections. The uncolonized portions are smaller than the diameter of the cakes and are isolated to the very tops.

Should I do away with lighting until they colonize fully? I am also temped to simply spawn them to coir and get even more fruits. What would be a prudent decision to start pumping some shrooms out of these babes, eh?

Thanks! :dancingshroom:

Cut off the uncolonized end, then dunk and roll, then put into FC.

Did any one else see this?

"Should I do away with lighting until they colonize fully?"

The answer is no.

Why is that?

I thought it a possibility that fruiting could be initiated at any stage of colonization. Otherwise, wouldn't the mycelium need to engulf the entire planet before fruiting can begin? Where is the boundary that colonization stops?

all right well by ful colonization i mean of the cake itself, if it stalled you used the srong jars or wrong recipe, if you got pics post them but until then theres an info section loaded with shit there get to reading, pulling a cake out thats not done colonizing is asking for trich, post a pic and we will start over

Well, they are done! Just imagine 360 degrees of shrooms engulfing a BRF cake, dwarfing the fruits in notfallen's sig. It took some extra TLC, but they're strong and stil fruiting. I think my problem was that I didn't separate the jars from the heat source enough during sterilization, thus cooking and hardening the substrate where it wouldn't colonize. I believe taking them out when I did was a good idea. The mycelium colonized from the top of the uncolonized part, rather than from inside. Thanks for the jovial conversation, it was great.

Oh Shroomery~ :brushrage:

Back in the day the same thing happened to me many times, and it was indeed from having bottom of the jars burn\cook the substrate. I was using a dish-rag also. I used to use a bunch of metal rings off the jars and a sheet of foil to make a 'plate' to lift them.

Now, and with my PC, I keep the jars entirely out of the water with a trivet.

It's very very worth getting a PC if you have the $.

Glad they worked for you.
