Container and light
    #1938827 - 09/21/03 10:21 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

I just bought a totally clear 106 qt container to put my cakes in. I was wondering if I should cover the sides of the container to prevent light from coming in or just leave it as is. In the FAQ it told me to use a clear lid container but said nothing about the sides. any feed back is groovy.

thanks

as p. cube said...
leave it alone, it'll be fine unpainted
but if you want to make it purdy and sparkly and all attention grabbing, paint it picasso, paint it.

while its true that light is partially responsible for initiating pinning, the emphasis is on 'partially', light alone will not cause the cakes/whatever to pin prematurely, they'll also need a reduction in temperature, and lack of uncolonized substrate. (or so my understanding goes) so given those facts, a clear container wouldnt be any better or worse than an opaque or solid colored one.

the only time this would be an issue (for painting the sides), is if you were trying to initiate the pinning _only_ where the light is shining. (e.g. painted sides, clear lid/top to try to get them to pin only there. but thats a fallacy ime, as pins will pin wherever they want to.

the faq said to use a clear lid container, so that light may shine thru and onto the cakes from somewhere. the lid is just more logical to have clear since most light shines down, through the top.

thats some feedback
remember that what i say shouldnt be taken as gospel, this is only my interpretation of the information provided to me.

Shrooms use light for direction as well. So if you want them to grow sraight up, then cover most of the sides. Of course, they don't have to grow straight up. It doesn't really matter; they just look prettier that way.

If this is a fallacy, then why do my casings always pin on the sides when I don't cover them and never pin on the sides when I keep them covered. This is no fallacy. It's a well known fact.
