Ecletic Music

Semi hypothetical question for musicians...
So lets say that you play an instrument or several instruments and you absolutely love eclettic style music and you want to play ecletic style. Where do you begin studying? Do you study one style and move onto the next or do you study multiple at the same time and try to incorporate them all? OR do you study your favorite electic style bands and try to emulate them?
Or do you get several guys together that enjoy one or two styles and just get them together and start jamming and see how it works out? But ultimately your style wouldn't be electic, it would simply be your style mixed with their styles which would be an ecletic band.
Maybe I'm over-thinking this. Anyway, how would you approach this scenario?

What is electic? You mean electric or eclectic?

probably just find a way to totally explore your creativity, just start recording track after track, get into a zone where you can do any kind of weird musical thing imaginable. i would never try that hard to fit into a genre, you gotta let it come naturally.

Assuming you're saying electric music, I'd say you wanna get yourself a basic computer program such as Logic, Ableton, etc.
That way you can play live track instruments, add them to the program, and then do all the "electric" stuff like EQ, compression, filters, and everythang.

The way I did it I collected a bunch of world music instruments and then id invite over a group of people, break out the bong and just start jamming. What I had at the time:
- bongos
- panflute
- djembe
- sitar
- bass (1 jass, one percussion)
- flute
- electric guitar
- acoustic guitar
- steel lap guitar
- harmonicas
- korg microkorg
- korg M1
Unfortunately Ive lost most of my instruments but I now have a mandolin.

I would say find people who are interested in the same areas you are and jam. From personal experience, I grew a lot as a musician once I started to play music with people. It doesn't even have to be good at first, just create your own style and go from there. Don't try to do what someone else is doing, or try to replicate it into your own style. Just play what feels right. Don't worry about what the genre is, or how you think it should sound. I believe collaboration is essential in music. So to answer your question, get some guys together and jam. Like I said its not gonna be great at first but its a hell of a lot better than playing by yourself. The sound will come with time.

Eclectic can mean a lot. Care to give us some artists who you would say are influences for this particular style you're going for?

to me man, the best eclectic music comes from a person who has a wide variety of inspirational sounds--which they then incorporate into their own personal sound
and yea, i think to really explore your own sounds requires a solo act--or at least a band that provides minimal creative input--though jammin' with other artists can still be a way to increase your own perspective

Either find someone who does what you want to do and study from them, or study the recordings.

Why would you attempt to rigidly define your sound when it is something that should be fluid and inspired, not formulaic and uninteresting? Particularly something so pretentious as attempting to force an 'eclectic' sound. That sounds like a recipe for bad music and lackluster musicianship.

That's not the intent of this question.
Say you like several "eclectic" style bands such as I do. You're obviously going to be inspired by these bands but you also want to know where they got their influences from so that you can also visit that style and incorporate it and make it your own. How are you going to know if these styles will clash or not? You have to experiment obviously and that also leads to inspiration.
What I was looking for when asking the question is where you would start? You would obviously draw influence from those electic bands and their style but you definitely would not want to just recreate them and be some kind of carbon copy.
To make your own sound you'd have to draw from somewhere...
For example, lets say you're learning a new instrument and its mostly found in Irish music but you would want to create your own style but to learn the instrument you would have to follow some style until you've learned the basics...where would you start? Obviously Irish trad is a good choice but you could also listen to the fiddle in blue grass and that would change your whole style in the end...
