Black IPA's
    #19341708 - 12/29/13 02:02 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Just brewed one, and it got me thinking that we should have a discussion about them. First off, let's think of a less obnoxious name for them so we don't have "black" and "pale" in the same beer name. Wooky Jack won a medal at GABF under American Dark Ale, so I like that name, but for some reason the public hasn't caught on.

Also, I think there's two ways to go about a Dark Ale; it's either roasty and chocolatey like a stout and then hopped like an IPA, or it's simply an IPA with the smallest amount of debittered black malt to give it color without any flavor contribution. Which is better?

Some people call them "Cascadian Dark Ales", I kind of like that name. I prefer a little roasty/chocolatey flavor in mine but not too much.

I like to get the roastiness in my cascadian dark ales from Carafa 2 special, it still needs some caramel\crystal 40 malt to round out the malt flavor. Carafa 3 was a little over the top and kind of astringent. So yeah, pretty much a slightly caramely IPA with about 5% dehusked roasted malt makes the tasty brew in my opinion..

A little history on the "birth" of this style.

I absolutely hate the name Cascadian Dark Ale. About as pretentious and egotistical as it gets, but what else can you expect from the hipsters.

I don't get this thread, did you want a discussion on what make a good tasting beer to this style or bitch about nomenclature?

Why can't it be both?

I'd post my CDA recipe, but don't want to share with anyone outside of Cascadia.  That means Northern CA and that's above the Bay Area even.  Maybe starting with Redding or something.  We are still working on the official Cascadia country map.
