I got fat over christmas.

Many of you may know that I am gradually working myself towards competing in long course triathalon events. Until recently my training has been fairly unstructured, although over the summer and especially this fall i've been taking a more structured approach. Consequently, I'd lost most of my excess body fat, leaned out, and gained definition.
I sprained my ankle pretty bad towards the beginning of December, and it provided a pretty serious setback. I couldn't run, had to stop riding my bike to work, and had to take it easy on my indoor trainer rides. Towards the end of the month I stopped everything all together; there was a sudden funeral out of town, finals at school, and then a week off and out of town at christmas.
I am quickly learning that spending any extended period of time with my family, and especially my girlfriends family is really bad for my diet. In these places I am exposed to all nature of snack foods that we don't keep around, cheese/deli plates, salami's, chips, crackers, bagels/other bread products, etc. etc.
I have a hard time controlling myself - my girlfriends mom is a great host, and always has tempting foods out and is offering to feed me. I figure "what the hell, its christmas!.." (the worst part being, I actually mostly controlled myself this year, and often restrained and never binged.)
Moral of the story - I gained 10lbs over christmas. I look all bloated and disgusting in front of the mirror.
After doing this twice in the past few months, I realize that I can gain a ton of fat in a matter of days, and it will literally take me 32hrs of medium intensity cycling and 1 month to get my physique back where I was before.
It is not worth it at all. Needless to say, after realizing these things, I will be more disciplined next time around. In addition to not eating shit food, I will have to PLAN AHEAD and make healthy snacks as an alternative to the junk that's available...
So, anyone else gain some unwanted weight over christmas?
Any strategies on self control in settings where you cannot control what you are eating?

It's not portion control, mostly just crap food.
At home - my girlfriend and I eat a TON of fruit and vegetables. I find when we are at these places alot of the food is processed snack food, or often bread products.
The lack of produce at these places is startling. It's not that they don't eat and/or have vegetables but to a much much lesser degree than we eat. Ie. frozen peas and potatos vs. an entire 2 or 3 course meal consisting of 5-8 different types of vegetables and a small portion of meat.
At home, I can eat whatever I want and continue to lose weight, because it's almost all unprocessed, whole foods, with minimal sugar/fat added.
The contrast in diet between us and them is startling.

If you can't control what you are eating then the only thing you can really do is control how much you are eating.
I like good food too. The holidays are filled with crappy yet delicious food, and often times you are in a position where it will be rude to refuse to eat it. So eat as little of what is offered to you as possible. Or flat out refuse to eat it, and give your host, your friends, your family, your very legitimate reasons.
Barring that I don't see what else you could do in the holiday situation.
Maybe step up your cardio routine next holiday season to help burn up the empty calories.

Good idea - there is no reason i couldn't continue my exercise routine through the holidays. This year I was sidelined because of my ankle, although I could have been swimming.
No excuses. Live and learn.
Thanks for the input.

my advice: start lifting weights , you will gain lean body mass and burn fat you will be able to eat more overall and wont need to overeat
another strategy you could use is to restrict calories before you eat out so you can control weight.
hope you recover quickly

I definitely got fat this nov/dec. i went to a 3-night phish run in late oct at Hampton, and my workouts died (literally, stopped) after that. Then it was thanksgiving holiday, then xmas and new years.
I'm trying to get back into it. I just fucking hate working out.

Yeah. For me, I am happy to run and cycle in the sun - but it's harder to find motivation in the dreary rainy days here.
Oh well, at least I am not alone.
Discipline, discipline, discipline.

I weigh over 300 lbs. What I can do with my life asnd perceptions people have of me are severely impaired by my obesity.
I would really like it if athletic people who gain a few pounds refer to themselves as "gotten fat".

IMPOSSIBRU.
You did NOT overeat 14,000 kcal over the holidays, most of that is water retention. Lower your carbs and eat foods that expel water, like celery and asparagus and you'll use a few fat pounds and a whole bunch of water weight. And have a shit regularly, it helps.
Love you man

Your right. It is coming off fairly quick after returning to exercise and a healthy diet.
Didn't mean to offend you wiccan, just trying to catch some attention in a humorous way, although this is clearly subjective.
