I re-named the thread to accommodate later post I will be growing all the listed mushrooms.
Hello it's been sometime hasn't it?! I can't stay away for ever.
So I went to my local grocery bought a bunch of random vegetables and mushrooms to make soup.
I seen that they had oyster mushrooms, not only that but they were still in clusters. I heard this is favorable if your trying to cultivate mushrooms from store bought. Before I made the soup I turned the water on hot and soaked some cardboard for maybe 10 minutes in the container I was going to grow them in. I heard it's best to cut some flesh out of the center of mass I proceeded to do so. Then I made sure the cardboard was at field capacity then shredded it in layers and layered a few peaces down in the container put like 3 hunks of flesh in there placed two Mir layers and repeated. that was done 12/03/13
here it is today

look at it on the wall on the sides

What substrate are you planning to use for fruiting?
How will you introduce the mycelium strips into a pasteurized substrate without introducing contaminants with it?
Just curious because im doing a few low tek oyster mushroom experiments myself, so im wondering what method you will use.
I used coffee grounds but having to layer the mycelium and grounds in the bag after pasteurizing it exposes everything to the air and possible mold spores.. So far ive only seen mycelium growth but ive had it in low temps to give the oyster mycelium a head start.

So my question is this how long should I wait till its fully colonized? Sadly I've never used cardboard before. Is there any good pictures of what fully colonized cardboard should look like?
Has anyone tried this in gladware containers/ or bags? spent coffee? I also was thinking of in the future using coffee grounds coir and shredded cardboard for various types of mushrooms.. any insight, Wisdom, anyone would like to share would be greatly appreciated!

Well I hadn't finished my post yet but I'm glad you joined in! Silly me!
I've been saving coffee for the past week or two, and placed it in a freezer grade zip-lock and froze it. I plan on pasteurizing it in the bag because it's already at field capacity in there. I was thinking this time of just waiting till it cools then opening the bag up as little as possible and with a gloved hand sort of pick the cardboard out and lay it in the zip-lock then gently sort of "shake/roll"? the coffee over/ around the cardboard and let it sit. idk it's worth a shot

You can grow oysters ok but slowly by just adding an agar wedge to a small bag of moist wood chips that you can slowly expand. Oysters are just so damn tenacious you could train a four year old to grow them.

Thanks for stopping in! I think if they can withstand that, I'm sure they will do fine the way I plan on doing them. I'm just using what I have on hand already.. Now when it comes to my other "projects" I'll not take chances. but it's all for shits and giggles here right?
You know oysters would love some coffee grounds coir and shredded cardboard, I can go buy some wood chips throw those in the mix and the oysters will be in heaven!

Looks great man! I'm doing something similar but I am using agar and grain to expand the culture. I'll be growing them out of supplemented hardwood sawdust and aspen shavings in myco bags sterilized in my PC. One test I did was to sterilize a small amount of prepared wheat berries and put a chunk of flesh from inside the stem of a store-bought oyster mushroom. This was just 2 days ago and it's already fuzzed up and is starting to colonize the grain.
I'll be keeping an eye on this one. Definitely get a second opinion but I'd read that oyster does less well on coir than on other subs like hardwood sawdust (and at $5 for 40lbs it's a bargain).
Here's a pick of the oysters I have going:

cool thanks.. I'm going to go look for that later when I go to the store. Would coffee grounds be good in there too? I want to use them since I've been saving them.

I don't have any experience with coffee but any supplementing is just adding more nutrient content to the sub so I'd assume a mix or just one kind of supplement would work as long as you don't make it overly nutritious for the species of mush you are growing. From what I've heard oysters are pretty forgiving but I'd look at an existing tek for some idea of how much to supplement your bulk sub.

I was thinking of growing some sort of flowering herb or vegetable in here. Would it be possible to grow mushrooms in this container at the same time?

It be cool to be able to grow them both at the same time.

Kind of forgot about this, how ever the oyster Is Growing like mad! I just don't know how I'm going to transfer this it isn't enough to spawn to bulk yet. I want to capture it on grains then make a grain LC and store it

Careful going cardboard > grain... it'll depend on your process but FWIW I saw a post recently (tried to find...can't) by the infamous RR that cardboard can easily harbour contams that won't grow out on the cardboard but will easily show their ugly faces when you put something nutrient rich like grain on top. Probably better to try to spawn it to a small bulk sub that has been properly pasteurized. With a GLC you might be asking for contam but maybe wait for another opinion.

I'd say its at about 80% its gotta take over the rest of the bottom cardboard peace still. what should I do with this? I wanna keep this going so I don't have to buy a lc of oyster.
