consolidated grains and cloning Q FOR RR

well we have all heard not to consolidate grain jars for spawning because the myc slows down and what not, but y is it that when you take a piece from a fruit or pin the myc takes right off? is it not considered the sub to be consolidated? i've tried g2g with an old consolidated grain jar an it was painstakingly slow but made it, i've now fruited it and put a pin on agar and just wondering if it's even worth it or should i start over, sorry if this makes no sense lol

I've never heard you shouldn't consolidate grains for that reason.
An extra 5-7 days in the jar won't hurt or slow it down.

You don't want to consolidate if your spawning. Even though the myc will need to recover from being broken up. Its just pretty pointless in the jars. Let your bulk sub go à few days though.

The only thing you would do with grains is spawn them.
I don't buy it.

I just saw an RR quote on the subject.
He said consolidation of spawn is not necessary. But it's also not a bad thing.

i didn't consolidate the grains on purpose i simply didn't have the grain for g2g or bulk o hand or time to do it, but from what i read consolidated myc switches modes and becomes slower to colonize new substrate which is y you don't wanna consolidate if your gonna g2g or spawn, but y is it that you can take a pin and put it on agar and not have the issue or will you have the issue? does that make more sense?

I am guessing its because the mycelium mates producing the fruit body which is different type of growth phase.

pins are at a stage where there rapidly growing so it's sorta the same thing withfruits, a mature fruit will be slower then a pin because it's already passed that phase, so regardless of weather or not your spawn run was slow the pin has entered a new phase

I think for the whole slowing down due to being in fruiting mode thing. Fruiting mode should only really start once pins form. Thats what I've always heard.

Irrelevant.
First of all, a week of consolidation won't slow down grains. We often let them go longer than that just due to work schedues.
Second, comparing a pin to consolidated grains is an apples-to-oranges thing. A pin is rapidly expanding tertiary mycelium which will clone easily onto agar and grow very fast. One shouldn't clone large, mature fruits since they're already in the process of shutting down, so later performance will be poor. RR

oh wow, I never knew that bit about cloning mature fruits.
So I should only be cloning pins? Or can you wait til they get a little bigger? I mean, how are you supposed to tell its a mushroom worth cloning if its just a pin?
I'm glad RR could settle this since no one believe me

who didn't believe you and yes you can let the pin grow a bit no worries just don't let it get to the point where it's puking spores everywhere and done expanding, your first pin is a good trait to look for or a oin from a cluster, size and other traits may be irrelevant if your conditions vary
