Guitar Part

I was given an old Yamaha acoustic guitar, FG 335II is the model.
It is missing the "nut" - and the guitar shop said it was a custom piece that would cost $100 to have made.
Seems ridiculous.
Anyone know where i can purchase one of these, or have one produced for a reasonable price?

A nut replacement should cost like $30-50. Go to a different shop.

god damn the nut... should only be bout 40 bucks. it really is a hard part to get on a guitar because you cant just buy one and put it on yourself unless you really know how. think about it, it has to be leveled perfectly. if not your strings will vibrate or be too far from the neck.
i have an old univox guitar (my first guitar ever) and its missing the nut. i made one out of a comb with a dremil and it kinda worked but its worth paying a pro to do it.
sucks bustin those nuts...

I got a guitar once that was missing the nut and I ended up making one in my uncle's wood shop. Pretty fun project. The guitar had a radiused fretboard but it would be simpler for a normal flat fretboard. To do it correctly on your own you would need round files in the right sizes, I just kind of fudged it with a triangular file. I used some kind of ebony-like wood he had around but I think you can use antler if you have some.

You can buy an un-notched nut for like $15 if you want to file it yourself. No need to use antler or wood and it makes it reasonably straightforward. You still need files though. Wood would not be a good choice for material as the string would stick a lot more than bone. Personally I would just pay the ~$40.

dude a nut????
Ive been playing/repairing guitars for nearly 20 years. A nut costs about $2.
buy one on ebay if the shops around you are trying to charge that much. Any nut can be modified with sandpaper to fit your guitar, though that yamaha is a pretty standard build. OP, should cost you about $3-5. Any more than that and youre overspending.

LOL!!
100$ for a nut!?!? I've bought a guitar nut for max $10, check a small repair store or professional guitar store (not one of these huge chains like Sam Ash or Guitar Center)

That whole guitar is worth 180$, I know, I own one.
A nut is cheap, brother. That guitar is a great beginner guitar by the way.
