Advice on fruiting cakes...
    #19385602 - 01/07/14 10:40 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Hello all,
This is my first post here but have been reading for a few months.
I started my shroom journey with 4 jars that fully cultivated and 2 jars had beat the others so I got a little excited and tried fruiting soon as they were done (before I knew about letting em sit for a few more weeks). I had a fairly big tub with perlite but things went down hill since the cakes started turning dark. This was before knowing of dunking or anything.  I tossed the discoloring cakes as well.  So after doing more research, I decided to do stuff by the book.. Made a new tub with the shotgun fruiting chamber technique.. Reused the perlite from the other tub.  Oh and let me add, I bought the wrong jars when I made these cakes... So when I had started fruiting with the 2 other jars that sat for 2 weeks after 100% on outside , I had to cut em into quarters to get out the cakes. I assumed it wouldn't do anything to the growth since fungus is fungus?? But anyways, I'm on a week into them being in fruiting chamber and from what I can tell comparing pictures on here and my cakes... I did dunk for 18 hours and rolled in fresh vercumilite.  They look like they were about to pin but maybe due to my heavy misting I think it stunted em. And I believe I didn't fan enough, I maybe only did it twice a day.. I had read to let more CO2 build up before pinning. But I decided to take a look at the under side of the cakes and make sure they didn't start growing other stuff... So I flipped some of em to help the water evoparate. But I'm just wondering if I can keep fanning more and misting a lil less that I could save em??? Humidity is perfect and temp is around 71F.

Thanks in advance!!!!!

just leave them and dont handle, mist until the surface glistens and fan for about 30 seconds after and repeat when the surface starts to dry up

Will do, just hate to see these cakes go bad like the others.
I know these questions get repeated a lot but I did wonder since I had cut em in quarters if that may have affected em.

71 degrees is a little low for a PF cake, if you don't get anything in a few days just break the cakes up and put them in dirt and start over, I had to do this a bunch.

Whatever you obviously know your stuff, but I never have success at 71 degrees with PF cakes and they do shrivel up am I that out of line?

I learned to bump up heat to 76 which would put the cake at about 80 degrees which is perfect?

Please inform me on what is wrong with this statement, some PF Jars are picky little guys.

Not to mention the OP admits having to cut the cakes and using the wrong jar before full colonization, just keeping it real, the OP knows how to do shit right now

i'm just messing around but they should fruit fine at those temps and you should only quit on a cake if it contams:thumbup:

I think with lower temps, they have slower growth??

Not true at all, they are more contam resistant and will usually be stalled. To properly fruit a pf cake you really need to raise the temp, humidity after a proper dunk and roll, 76 is perfect cakes are picky, this raises the temp to 80 degrees inside the cake.

Fruiting is induced by humidity, Fresh air exchange and light. Mist and fan 3 times a day, do not soak just a proper mist, make sure light is 6500k and make sure your SGFC is properly built

I have had to buy a space heater and it takes care of the problem right away.

But good luck I am not trying to press a negative vibe.

Agreed Mr. Crankey! but also if they shrivel up and bruise blue with no fruits then you should ditch them in the garden. This will happen when they are not properly cared for, don't get me wrong you probably know a shit load more than me.

Yes they CAN still fruit at this temp but you will have a higher success rate at 76 guuranteeeed

fixed:thumbup: lol and i probly don't know more...but lower temps will just slow it down a little but not anything noticable at 71 and won't hurt yeild
