Well this tub is a little different from that one. This one has a circular pattern of holes at the top of the short sides and 4 holes on the bottoms, one on each side. The bottom holes are 1.5 inches. This tub is bigger and taller than those ones as well.

I don't use SGFCs. Its style of "automated" humidification and air motion is calling for way more misting than is necessary.
Instead I keep enclosed containment.  By having only as little FAE (fanning) as necessary they lose, and thus have replaced, only as little moisture as is necessary.  I find 1-2 fannings and mistings a day to be quite low maintenance and works wonderfully for me.  With some of my custom fruiting chambers I don't even fan or mist anyway.

If using a SGFC is part of the problem, then why does it say you can use them in the tek?

Because you can, easily.

I didn't say SGFC use is a problem. I said using a SGFC is part of YOUR problem with the tek.  You have low humidity, and the shotgun tub provides humidity from the perlite with air exchange.  This means that yours dries up extra quickly and involves more maintenance, leading you to falsely believe that it's the containers that are needing the maintenance, when a casing layer is a casing layer.

If you just had those containers in an unmodified tote, just giving them as little FAE as is necessary for full results, the container would HOLD the humidity that the misted sides/bottoms/top of tub & casings released into the air after exchanges, instead of constantly giving more away like the sgfc.

If you want to mist less, use something other than SGFC where lots is required for it to work especially in your environs.

For most people misting a couple times a day is not a problem, but for me it its hard to remember to do it before 5am when I leave for work, and by the time I get home at 7pm all I want to do is go to bed. Of course I always make time for mycology everyday, but this ain't my only iron in the fire  Hopefully work will even itself out soon and allow for a little more babysitting.

Sounds like the invitro versions would do you quite nicely, but they're not as efficient/effective per space and sterilization, just per work input and ease of conditions.

(I NEVER mist my invitros)

Wish we could see some pics of these custom FC's, perhaps shots of them should be part of the writeup. That being said, I'm not really a SGFC guy either, more of a monotub person where I don't even really look at them until a few days to a week later.

If this custom FC is the way to get good results with these then I really would have wanted to build one (provided the cost was not too extreme). For sure I will want to build one for my next attempt. Please give me some details.

"Custom FC" referred to my custom-arranged ultrasonic greenhouse and my "extended invitro" of bottle-tops over containers.  I've had up pics of both
Many appropriately-sized containments could work great.

Using an ultrasonic humidifier (No "cool mist") with a fan to stir the droplets into the air easily reaches saturation humidity and 'mists' the casings more gently than anything else in the world could. The extremely low air exchange requirement is easily met in maintenance alone (watering, harvesting, refilling humidifier) without any extra gadgetry.

Wouldn't a mono tub full of pp5's all cased moderately be closer to an actual mono tub, as far as for comparison?
It should be set and forget too right?... At least till the first flush is underway

I doubt it. A monotub relies on the water in the bulk substrate to keep the RH constant.

... Because the giant wet mass block of 3x-8x the mycelium requires multiple times as much air exchange, thus requiring constant gradual exchange amongst poly-fil holes, thus requiring constant greater moisture loss to the incoming air (which they still can have trouble getting enough of)

If the air in your environment is very low RH, such as yours pasty, this constant inlet of dry air can still leave some slight RH problems even with monos.

I put 14 containers in an unmodified 66qt tote, not a "mono tub" with holes and polyfil.
They need far less air exchange, thus far less moisture is loss.  The sides of the tote should be misted when the casings are and maybe even sometimes when the casings aren't since the casing layers should need quite little misting.

Well I'm not gonna bitch tooo much about the SGFC cause in all fairness, I wouldn't have nearly as much issue with the maintenance aspect if it were another species. I just like my cubes to be self sustaining. Maybe for my next test of this I will try the unmodified tote. At any rate I'm not complaining today, got some really nice pins setting up on two of my pp5 containers, and their starting to move into the centre, which was one of my concerns

Nice!
That's why I love casing layers.  They're like a magic trick to orient fruiting behaviours.

Things are starting to move along. The 4 of the PP5 containers have pins now and 1 of them has pins that are maturing quite quick.

Meanwhile bulk is chugging along. . .

One thing for sure, I can grow a damn nice trich bucket :lmafo: Just waiting for the PP5 to take off, lots of primordia forming, and I even see pins below the casing layer at the sides of some of them just waiting to bust up through the top. Just need some patience I guess.
