I'm about to get started doing agar, and i was wondering how some of you guys number and track your plates and generations. is there a standard, or does everyone have their own method?
love to know...

I think most people have their own method. A good few things to indicate are the date you made the dish, the date you inoculated it(if its different), the variety, how many transfers it is(MS 2nd.. or from clone tissue etc...), the kind of agar it is if you use more than one and can't tell them apart by color of the media, etc.. and anything else that's important to you

i never keep a notebook, keep everything in my head based on where i put something. hard to explain but it works for me... plus nothing for someone else to pick up and start to read...
your method does make sense...

what you need to really keep track of is what fruited the best and make a culture slant for long term cold storage.

totally, but i'm not there yet. need to get something on agar first... but yah, if i'm able to get a really nice isolation then keeping a slant is definitely something i'm going to add to my bag of tricks...

i think that's what i'm kind of going to do... but since i'll be taking the best bits off of my first plate that might mean more than 1 transfer to a second gen. so i'll label them a bit differently... i can see it in my head...
thanks guys...

just make sure you keep track of what dish inoculated what, so if you get yourself a NICE PINSET you can always go back to said dish
