Certain oyster strains better for lime bath?
    #19377997 - 01/06/14 04:24 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Have any of you noticed certain strains of oyster performing better on lime pasturization than others? I'm currently growing two strains, both from Aloha. One is doing great on the lime, no contamination on any of them, and the other I have had to trash nearly 100% of the bags (20 logs or so). All other factors are pretty much equal.

One thing- I don't know the magnesium content of the calcium hydroxide I am using, but assuming the one strain did well, I'm guessing that would not be an issue? What particular strains have worked well for you guys?

everything except yellow oyster has worked well for me.  i only use lime bath for straw.  i was quick to blame some purchased spawn when I had contams once, but it was really just moldy straw.  you can't use that stuff.  I would expect kings to be iffy since they are slower IME.

I have had an issue with pseudo ulmarium (the oyster like Hypz. Ulmarium)in that the same processed batch spilt with a Pl. Ost strain contaminated but the PO was fine. Which is strange as that HU is an aggressive culture.

With you on the yellow as well. Colonises OK but refuses to fruit.

For me all of my oysters do great on it. Kings I grow on sawdust.

Yes, some are better than others;  it may be sensitivity to the MG.  For us the Brat oysters did the best.  Wellington was a bit more finicky and took longer to fruit.  In general, look for one that is very vigorous colonizer and quick fruiter.

Sounds like it may be senescens with your weak culture

Aloha carries a lifetime culture replacement guarantee

I'd call them and confirm what generation your culture is.
If you got it from some one else, how many times has it been G2G transferred or even agar dish transferred?

That's interesting, it's the psuedo ulmarium that I'm having trouble with as well. Aloha markets it as Elm Oyster. I believe it's also one of the strains they did their Africa study on lime bath with. Funny that we both have problems with it while they didn't.

I feel dumb, what are Brats?

I also have Aloha Elm Oyster and it fruits even better on lime then it did on just heat, for me anyways. What brand of lime are you using?

Using Hydrated Lime from this company: http://www.cheneylime.com/

All the lime I can find locally does not list the chemical analysis, which is lame. Looking at the site however, it seems only their dolomitic lime has any mention of MgO? I don't do chemistry, lol.'

Doing another batch from Elm spawn off a different set of plates I did, so that should rule out senescence?

I really want to keep growing this strain as my customers like it. Doing some Pohu bags this weekend, we'll see how that goes.

where you at mr tumnas?  i use the same brand of lime, i figured you might be in the south, too.  I'm pretty sure the back says 99.9 ca(oh)2, so no magnesium

the way they make their lime tells me you got the right stuff. They are making their "hydrated Lime" out of "High calcium quicklime"

Yep it's the Aloha Elm and my lime is fine.
I didn't spot that AM were using it, need to go back and check their docs for spawn ratio as the Elm is a great product, for me superior taste, texture and shelf life to Pl.Ost. Also way more tolerant of CO2/light issues.

Not sure where my H ulmarius culture came from, but it out performs any of my oyster strains hands down
I use 7g hydrated lime per gallon in my pasteurization process and it loves it.

Are you in the southern hemisphere?
I have a buddy in South Africa with similar problems
We've all but narrowed his problem down to it being too warm during colonization

Nope. South UK.

What sort of colonisation temps are you running and is that a US gallon ?

The same culture rips through heat past straw, but contaminates in lime soaked. So it is not the culture or the substrate!

For my setup I use 8 cups lime to 200 gals of water which gives me a ph of 12 to 13. I colonize all of my oysters at 73 degrees.

I like room temp for these 70F-75F which is easy this time of year, obviously not the issue for you

How many times has it been transferred while in your possession?
Has it always behaved this way? or
Are you still using the same slant and suddenly it is resistant to lime?

Aloha recommends 55F-65F http://www.alohaculturebank.com/PleurotusulmariusElmA.html
So I been fruiting them a bit high

They also recommend supplemented wood substrate
I've grown both wood and straw
Straw gives a more oyster shaped fruit and lots of flushes, like 6 0r 7
On wood the fruits grew sparse but large, they had some what small caps and big bulky stems. On wood I got 1 or 2 flushes

IMO for the market or dinner table straw grown is more appealing

Maybe the culture doesn't like the high pH?

Drake, I'm in the New Orleans area. Where you at?

I've fruited my elm oysters at 80 degrees. One of the widest temperature ranges I've grown, they seem to like the cold a little better though.

I'm kind of thinking it's ph related as well, although I find it really weird that aloha did so well with it.

I did some more batches with lime that haven't contaminated yet, but the growth is definitely slower. I'll keep y'all posted.

That's what I thought - but now I see AM saying it is well suited to lime treated sub. Time to give it another go.
