Substrate question, Montoub Without a Pressure Cooker
    #19383845 - 01/07/14 05:20 PM (10 years, 23 days ago)

So I want to set up a monotub or two for my next grow ideally and I don't have a PC my question is would it be better to steam steralise some grain as substrate or knock up some normal BRF cakes crumble and spawn to bulk? I don't like the idea of having to steam steralise For hours and hours and I've heard bad things about crumbling cakes

Well, I would rather do it for 8 hours if it would be considerably better... I'm a rampant stoner and I don't want my canning bath to boil dry

if you're from most places in north america you can use craigslist to find a PC locally for probably 20$ that will hold probably 2-4 quart jars.

I can get a shitty 7L one from a Argos.. But anything larger has to be imported it seems.. Bar the big boy pressure cookers from Hawkins.. But they don't have pressure gauges :/

no need for a gauge as long as it has a calibrated weight or toggle on it it will get to the right pressure and vent accordingly.

When the toggle or weight starts to vent/jiggle/rock then turn the heat down till it is just barely vent/jiggle/rock(ing) then you know it's at 15PSI or whatever and not going down as well as not trying to get to 16PSI.

thankfully our governments have done one good thing for us and that's making sure any PC you buy works well enough to be safe without the pressure gauge indicator.
