Trying to set up a martha...
    #19381915 - 01/07/14 11:18 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

So i have 2 humidifiers at the bottom of my martha, and 12 holes stuffed with polyfill through the plastic. Im about to just say fuck it and get rid of the humidifiers all together.  thats when i started thinking into alternatives. Could i simply place my martha in a bin full of perlite to retain humidity?

Do you guys have any other tips for keeping up humidity?

Im planning on growing oysters, reishi, lions mane, and the occasional tray of actives.

Why two humidifiers? Just one keeps my Martha up to snuff. Perlite didn't do it for me, I tried that, and it grew algae in it.

watching this to see responses...
i was gonna go with
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/18322939#18322939

it has one cool mist on bottom (FAE) and one ultra on top (RH balance).  no poly, no slits.  i like it most so far from what i have read.

i have the $ to order the martha, but wanna make sure its good to go.

fractal: "occasional tray of actives" made me lol

You don't need the poly fill. Your not worrying about contamination if your sub is ready to fruit. Lots of fruiting rooms, including the ones I ran had no air filtration and I drew air in from outside. Keep the ultrasonic and add either a cheap box fan or a few small $2 computer fans to circulate the mist. I would get a large drip tray for the bottom unless water isn't an issue where it is.

this is what I'd like to go with also, but I just am not comfortable putting a humidifier into the greenhouse, when most of them say not to use in humidity above 65%, maybe I'm just looking at it weird and the electronics or anything are as sealed as they are going to be/power supply/transformer/etc.

I'd build a platform right next to it and pipe or flow it in, instead.and I do not see needing more than one USH. I have a small one and seriously it maintains more then enough humidity for 95% at about 45% power on a timer for twice a day with two totes size. I like the idea of using perlite also. maybe small tupperware in small trays in various places with holes drilled in it, throughout the GH, instead of like a large bin at the bottom filled with it. and it also has to be off the ground for circulation I believe.

That being said I am a total newb (My typical disclaimer) and have no real verified clue, just theory, as sound or as not sound as it may be.The above GH has verified production, obviously.

The only reason I'm using polyfill is that I feel it retains humidity. Is this not true?

It only retains humidity by restricting airflow.  It won't work for most edibles, co2 gets too high.

My door is just unzipped all the time for fae, with a single ultrasonic humidifier.  I think maybe you're over thinking it

Greenhouse with flaps open and a single $40 vicks coolmist seems to work great for me... no need for polyfill. One flap is open all the way and the other halfway. Gotta just keep tweaking it til its right for you.

Positioning the air intake of the coolmist perfectly seems to be key... not too close to the flap but not totally shoved in the corner where its only recirculating stale co2 filled air either.

My 2 are at the bottom. Im trying to keep it simple. The ultrasonic mist is helped up by the fan from the evaporative humidifier, which runs 24/7. The ultrasonic is on for 30 mins every few hours. Ive removed the polyfill.

But im very curious to see you guys'.

Here's an old pic of mine.  That rear humidifier's intake is taped to a hole in the back of the GH, so it sucks in all fresh air.  That one in the front right has been replace with a Vicks 400 for humidity.  Works pretty well.  If I'm growing oysters, I'll unzip the flaps.  For other stuff, I'll leave 'em shut since winters are REALLY dry here.
You don't really need 2 humidifiers though, that rear one actually broke, so I just use it for air now instead of a fan, and the V400 does all the humidity.

I don't use a cool mist because my fae is passive. I just leave my front unzippered and fresh air is constantly exchanged.  My Martha is in a bathtub in a spare bathroom we don't use.

forrester, with just one vicks 400 whats rh like on top shelf?  my sister just gave me one of those animal shaped/colored humidifiers.  they put out fog on the top, do u know what I'm talking about?  they seem quite popular..walmart, target, home depot, etc.  i was thinking of using that on the top if the cool mist doesn't pump it out.  do u run it on regular or high setting?

I have no idea what RH is, I've never bothered to get a hygrometer.  I just mist every morning and put less picky stuff on top.
Those little animal ones where you can see the fog work great, they humidify much better than my v400 - only thing I don't like is most of them don't hold that much water and you have to refill every day.  I'd do just like you said and run it on top, that should work well.  I'd run it intermittently on high, should extend the time before you have to refill it.  You can get cheap timers at Walmart that let you set 30min on/off intervals if you don't have a better one.

Passive air exchange like liam said works well too, only reason I use the intake humidifier is because it's still there and I have nothing else to do with it

If i remember correctly buckeye oysters tells in a video that he keeps the rh in his growroom at about 85 or a bit less, he says then you won't get mold on the walls and such

I have it on the second shelf... it seems to be a good balance. When I had it on the bottom floor, too much water was collecting on the tray I have beneath. It seems like giving the mist more air space to work with (mist that shoots up and doesn't dissipate and then passes the humidifier on the way back down) allows it to combine with the air and not condensate as much. If you put it at the top, it just hits the top plastic and immidiately pools up.
