Is it a mold or just puffy mycelium? Can you take any photos? It can be common with lack of free air exchange to see mycelium poofing out like cotton from the cake. But it is always possible that it is cobweb mold. A photo would help.

It's pretty normal from what I've read. Sometimes you can get more flushes but contam happens eventually with cakes.
Pics would be nice.

No that's contam. trich it looks like. ditch that now
might have been able to save that from happening had you not let that cake sit directly on the perlite!

Oh yeah that's definitely contaminated. Looks like trich. Get any that are contamed away from your other clean cakes and bury them.

Yeah that is no good. Remove it as soon as possible to keep it from spreading. Once it gets started it can be hard to stop without starting over from scratch.

I think there are a few teks around here for cleaning the perlite. Hell I think you could prolly just put it in the oven.

Bake it in the oven at like 300 degrees for a half hour shake it up half way through. That should clean it up pretty decent.

I personally put the whole SGFC in the shower and run the water over it for like 2-3 minutes and call it clean.

That will just water the mold spores. Boil or bake the perlite until you know the contaminants are nuked. It's mineral so you could boil it all day without hurting it.
Cakes will succumb to mold much faster if you allow the mushrooms to open caps fully and dump spores. When the mushrooms dump a load of spores, it signals the mycelium that the life cycle is complete. The mycelium weakens and begins to shut down, allowing the molds which are always present to start growing on the substrate. RR

Doesn't the perlite have enough spores on it after you strain it in your kitchen after the boil anyway? FWIW I've been using the same perlite for 8 months and only ever washed it(which is the same thing as my re-hydrating procedure). It still looks bright white and clean.
I'll bake it when I run into a problem.
