Fruiting chamber
    #1938128 - 09/21/03 02:45 PM (20 years, 4 months ago)

Ok my buddy constructed an incubator made out of two storage containers...the bottom one is filled with water and a fishtank heater and the top is where hes putting the cakes... should the lid be on the top one or will that mess up air exchange...

Also another quick question could u use the same setup and put perlite on the bottom of the top chamber(assuming its a clear container with light being allowed in) and use that as a fruiting chamber to get the correct humidity and the right temperature?

Ya, keep the lid on. Air exchange is not that important until pinning/fruiting.

Depending on your tek, your jars will get fresh air every time you check them.

good luck

you should be able to safely put the lid on the second storage container.

air exchange isnt as important during incubation as it is for fruiting.
as the jars colonize, they'll consume O2 and release CO2, this is all within the jar, so putting a container(the jar) in a container (the storage container) shouldnt cut down on the air exchange much at all.

tell your buddy to at least make sure his cakes can breathe somehow.
im not sure what others suggest, but recently i place my jars upside down in the incubator. since CO2 is heavier, and the metal lids have holes, i feel this allows for adequate gas exchange, as the CO2 slowly seeps out the bottom(or the top/lid if you prefer), all the time. we'll see how it works.

as for your second question, yes, your buddy could use the incubator for a fruiting chamber when its no longer needed for incubation. this might not be a bad idea overall, though you will have to lower the temperature of the fish tank heater in the bottom container during its fruiting cycle...you probably dont have to, as im sure the moment i said you 'have to', someone will say "nuh uh, ive grown cubensis at higher temperatures than reccomended"...anyway, im rambling...ill stop now.

hope this helps in some small way

what about the air exchange during the fruiting process does he have to do anything for that?

you'll need an automated system to handle the air exchange at intervals throughout the day for the fruiting cycle (optimal, but involves more initial setup)

or you'll need to fan the terrarium 2-3 times a day by hand if no automation is used. (easiest, and usually sufficient for most cakes)

the number of times you need to fan a day is really dependant on the size of your terrarium. if its a 20 gallon fish tank with a couple cakes, you wouldnt need to fan it as often. if its two cakes in a 10x8ish rubbermaid container per se, then you'll need to fan it more often, since theres less cubic feet of fresh oxygen for the mushrooms to consume.

You could do it pretty easy with a poormans pod. Some have already done it.

Poormans pod

Also if you put a little pump in the incubator next to the heater you get more even heating.

Believe me it works.
