OliverJames said: Any of you guys lift or just go to the gym in general? I decided to start putting on some muscle in the past year and I've made quite a bit of progress. I'm by no means huge, but it feels good to have gotten stronger especially when it comes to manual labor. Much easier to lift things up, carry them for longer distances. My body also just looks much more fit and toned, which is a self esteem booster.
Anyway, I've always been a pretty relaxed dude, when I go to the gym I do my own thing, got a routine I follow, I'm still a beginner when it comes to lifting so its obvious that I'm still figuring shit out. I can't understand for the life of me why some dudes are such assholes at the gym. Some big dudes will walk in and I'll hear him and his buddies mocking people like me, who clearly aren't massive and benching 350lbs. Or they'll just stand around being all obnoxious and shit. It really kills my vibes when I'm at the gym at that kinda thing goes on. I just started hitting the gym when its more empty and I can just in peace. Why do people have to be like that
Are you sure they're not mocking your form, or are they mocking your looks? Cause I do mock people sometimes, but only if their form is really shitty and they're not doing the exercise right.
Maybe they are? I've been working extensively on the 3 compound movements, bench press, dead lift, and squat. I used to be a long distance runner, could run a mile in under 4:40, so I was pretty decent, but that much running burned off all my fat and muscle and left me looking like a stick.
Since lifting I've put on around 30lbs, mostly muscle but definitely some fat. I can bench pretty well and my squat form is okay but I'm still working on my dead lift, I'm obviously still learning. I go to a school gym at my university and unfortunately there are a huge number of meat heads and bros. I mean these guys clearly think they're the shit.
I shouldn't be so self-conscious, your right, but its tough for me at the gym. I'm not an insanely tall dude and I'm not huge, so when I go in and have these meat heads eying me, it just totally throws off my focus.
I just started goin to the gym when its not crowded so I don't have to deal with it

Why don't you just go confront them next time they do it if it bothers you? You shouldn't change up your schedule just so you won't feel like you're bein judged by some random strangers in a gym. Not even in an aggressive way, just ask if they're there to train or stare, tell them they've been where you are at some point so it makes no sense to judge..or something like that.

Ah thats your problem, you're just dealing with highschool jock mentality. Some of those guys never grow out of it. Fuck em. Just think of it as mental strength training as well, build your focus so that they could be pointing and laughing and it still wouldn't faze you. And don't take someone 'eyeing' you necessarily as criticism. I watch people all the time because its a great way to pick up new workouts
I go to the climbing gym, so half the people are super serious- working on handstand pushups and one-armed pullups and muscle ups, and the other half are parents chasing their kids around like its a jungle gym and college couples on date night... It's an interesting scene If anything, people are too nice- sometimes I want to work on a problem myself without someone giving me the answer or distracting me.

Haha people at the gym judging people at the gym, so sad. Just worry about yourself no one gives a shit about you, the only time I look at what people do is when I'm like "oo, nice move" and wanna copy it cause I don't know too much. Otherwise I couldn't care less. Thank da lawd we have headphones

The thing is, a lot of people that go to to the gym think it's all about lifting heavy. It's not. It's about proper form first. Any meathead that isn't a complete dumbass knows this.
So this is my suggestion.
When you do the following exercises (bench, dead lift, squat), do the following things:
1. For bench, go down ALL THE WAY until the bar hits your chest. Many weightlifters do not count it as a "real rep" if you only go down halfway, and will make fun of you.
2. When you squat, do a DEEP SQUAT. Make sure your back is straight, and keep your face looking towards the ceiling to keep your back straight. People who only go down halfway for the squat but add 400lbs are the ones that get laughed at. Adding heavy weight for the sake of adding weight is not impressive at all if you aren't doing the form right.

Maybe they wouldn't think you were an asshole if you refrained from doing that
Well, I don't really MOCK them I guess, but if I'm with a friend and I see dat shit I usually whisper, "That guy is not doing the form right..."

There are more than 3 compound lifts - at the bare minimum you should include overhead press or you are at a high risk of hurting your shoulder. Bench press only works on the front of your shoulder and if you don't even it out by working on the back (via overhead press) you are a high risk for injury down the line.
You should read Starting Strength by Mark Rippetoe.

You should take what Mark Rippetoe says with a grain of salt though.

running a mile under 4:40? impressive. How many miles at that speed tho? 3..4?
I could probably do 3 miles in 12 minutes (4 minute miles) than be burnt out for a bit... but I don't go for speed..Distance is my goal... Sadly to win a half marathon you'd have to basically do the first 6 miles at like 4:30 per mile than the remaining 7.1 in like 5 minute miles, which would be a bitch.. But one day ill come top 10....
wish i never smoked a cig in my life, but 4 years of it sucked... 9 months and 2 days without one and I'm still not good enough....
To be on topic, fuck what others think....can they touch you? no....emotionally? it seems you are letting that mirror reflect your innerworld so ultimately its all your fault... they wouldn't be assholes if it didn't effect you... this is the shroomery, we are supposed to be above and beyond the close minded... they win if you let them win

From the moment i step through the door till the moment i leave; my headphones are in and blasting...I don't go to the gym for anyone else, so this helps me stay inside my head and focused.

I remember a friend of mine mentioned something about the gym last week, it was right before I was walking to my chemistry class & he began going on about the gym. We spoke about it for aboout 10 minutes before we moved on to a new topic. I don't remember exactly what he said about the gym, but apparently they recently plowed a gym now its history. They ar eplanning on building a new one to replace it an a few months, but idk exactly when they are.
I've never been too big on the gym, but my friends used to go ther all the time. They would sneak off their when I would be playing chess. I normally played chess & then I'd receive a message informing me that they arrived at the gym. My brother actually just got back from the gym & he made a new gym buddy. They both are intending to record their gym sessions & then see what results they got to match em. Normally they don't match up to each other & one of them is rather off.

His approach is just one way to go about things is all, it won't necessarily work for everyone, as obviously different people have different goals. You don't have to squat low bar like he recommends if it doesn't work out for you, his answer isn't the definitive one.

Where did i say not to use proper form? You should do what works for you, not for other people.

That grip will put a lot of strain on the wrists/elbows/biceps. I'd like to see a narrower grip, straight wrists with the thumb over the bar, and, if flexibility permits, higher elbows.
